so let's get this rumour mill started... with the essential closure of one runway the overlay will be modified and more or less west of 101st can go up up and away.... anyone placing bets?

1. curious to see if mayfair village plans will change

2. urbia towers will now rise 245 floors of fluting awesomeness

3. Bp's lands have a chance now

^Agree about BP. Seriously though it could have gone through with shorter buildings, but the potential is greater cause now there is an option of skyscrapers on that land.

Urbia towers are probably already over the height limit, so they'll be able to go ahead as is. Same with Pearl.

Ultimately I can see a lot of really tall towers going in Oliver, so against the Downtown skyline from views like the NE and N, the towers in Oliver won't look like dwarfs compared to the downtown skyscrapers.

Now if they can only sell the needed 70% before construction starts... With this economy? Good luck! It'll be curious to see what does get proposed though...

The work to be undertaken under this contract consists of: Demolition of existing stairway canopy and construction of new stairway canopy in Sir Winston Churchill Square; Installation of new doors in the Centennial Pavilion, Sir Winston Churchill Square. The successful Bidder shall complete the Work not later than November 15, 2009.

So I dont know if I'm a little giddy still from the excitement of last nights airport vote, but I'm pining for a 70 storey proposal downtown to act as the pinch I need to let me know that this can now (potentially) happen in Edmonton and I am, in fact, not dreaming. Hooray for densification and "building up".

Procura and ATB really did seem committed to making the best of those sites with the height restrictions in place, so good on them for that. The last time that anything significant was built under that part of the overlay was...the Big Blue whale otherwise known as 44 Cap in '83?

But the phased closure of the airport means that there's a few years to play with, and a redesign/dc2 on something like Cascadia or Azure has got to be tempting and the timelines would line up.

A #4 for the list: GMAC starts following the lead of Concordia (the Montreal one).

I'm hopeful but not optimistic given the precarious state of the global and provincial economy. I'd really caution the lot of you not to think too big because I've got a feeling you're going to be disappointed when what does get proposed is unveiled and not as grandiose as you'd hope...

But if I could play King of Edmonton, I'd love to see a mixed-use 1000'+ highrise that encompasses office, hotel, condo and observation space... A new icon for the city...

I still think we need densification rather than height. But then again, I'm a sucker for tall buildings.. so as long as it's purdy and never sits vacant; I'm 100% all for it

Let's build Western Canada's Tallest, announce it before the BOW is done!!

This will not go away as fast as we all hope. I lived here to long to think anything different.

Well my opinion if were going to sacrifice a runway and eventually a whole airport for the sake of high rise buildings and intensification, lets make it damn well worth it... If were just going to build slightly taller version of Epcor or Icon, then what's really the point?

Yes. We're not Hong Kong - we don't need supertalls yet. A few really high ones like 170m or 200m is okay, but I'd rather have 10 100m buildings built (in some areas our limit is like 80m so we'd still be benefitting from airport closure) than 2 really tall'ers.

Yes but times are changing. Closing the first runway will probably be quick, and over the next 5-10yrs the whole thing will be shut down. But I don't think and hope not more than 10yrs, let alone 7 or 8.

Like I said before and I will continue to say, closing the CCA is NOT a panacea for all the ills of Edmonton nor is it really turning over a new leaf, at least not in itself... Sure it MAY be a harbinger of better things to come but it could easily go the other way... Kingsway Common to me doesn't seem so far fetched...Unfortunately...
