The proposal that got quashed last year was for the actual safeway site, right?
This is on the other side of the 7-11, so two lots west of there.

oops, my bad. The 7-11 on the plan and ancient memories are throwing me off.

Had residents seen renderings of this? It's so Classy with a capital "C" that I'm surprised they objected so much.

i will do my coldrsx imitation now and say that i have and they're cool and i don't have anything i can post... the firm has - and rightfully - recently received kudos in this thread for some of their other designs.

I am pretty sure that IanO got the various points being made. Back to the Grad Housing...the schematics are not up on their site yet. I believe however that there will be little opportunity for creativity given the need to "mesh" in with the Garneau community expectations...something to do with herding cats. If I am not mistaken the U has taken a few beatings from that community.

Residents didn't object, for the most part. The community league was all for it. The objecters were a few immediate neighbours who were worried about parking. The development had only one stall per unit, and it included a whole bunch of two and 3 bedroom units (family friendly!) so unfortunately it needed a variance as it didn't meet zoning requirements.

could have been a lot worse - they could have gotten this "oops" instead:

with the "oops" being the building in the foreground, not the reasonably well articulated ones in the background.

^grand central manor is even worse. alta vista at least has some glass (and for those who really feel the need to point out the obvious, yes grand central manor has punched windows).

I see all the rich guys in Edmonton are denouncing the possible closing of the City Centre Airport.

Logic says it can't be cost effective to have a small airport in the centre of a city, when 20 minutes south of downtown there is another airport.

These guys want us to subsidize the operation of their personal planes.

The International airport could be redesigned to accept private planes. There could be a separate terminal for "no security" flights for private aircraft and small northern flights.

Some of the revenue from the sale of the downtown airport lands could be used to provide high-speed transit service between the International and downtown.

Do not believe all the costs and revenues projections that so-called experts are pounding out by the bushel. As a consultant, I could make a report work in favour of whomever is paying me or whatever benefited me the most.

Once the City Centre Airport is closed, it gives the city a golden opportunity to build a world class community to encompass a new arena, a bigger NAIT, a quality Formula 1 race track, high-density housing and a vibrant business community with the LRT running through the middle of it all.

The irony is that the rich guys currently lobbying to keep the airport open would probably benefit more from its closure and redevelopment.

There already are flight centres at the north end of YEG. One a couple of years old.

That's a cool building. But let's remember when we post this kind of stuff to illustrate what we're missing in Edmonton, that Ottawa doesn't "have too many buildings like that" either. Just saying.
