Good afternoon from Bilbao Spain.
What an incredible place. In the last 12 years the City has completely changed itself. The Guggenheim is just one piece of the over all puzzle. the urban renewal projects and new developments should be an example to any city. Edmonton could learn a lot from this place. the new buildings are simple, yet very unique and artistic. public art is everywhere. the old and the new work great together. ill post pics when i return

I think it's unrealistic to expect there to be full serivces within a half a block from any high density building. Except for those who are mobility challenged, a four block walk takes all of what, 6-8 minutes ? Hardly an inconvenience I'd say.

I like the Raintree, though I would rather see The Pearl go first, but I'll take it. As for the Tango, wasn't the original design 35 stories, and got rejected by EDC for that reason (too tall, it scares the locals)? If so, they did what? Lob off six floors and now suddenly it's OK?!?! What's the big f**ing difference between 29 and 35 stories? I want Edmonton to shine so badly, but sometimes it seems like we are afraid to. I say send Tango back to the drawing board and make the damn thing 50 stories; then tell the locals to move to Moose Jaw if they're afraid of height.

There was talk of dropping the tower significantly, as there are a lot of development opportunities in the area surrounded by Jasper ave, 109 ave, 82 st & 85 st, & they wanted to 'step' the construction up away from the valley edge. But it doesnt sound like this is going to happen.

The only thing Tony Caterina has ever agreed with is expanding the City Center Airport. I have no idea what his motives are for anything, including that.

New development on the East end of Jasper Ave near the Stadium are long overdue. That's such a great area.

^ it is a great area. There's already an eclectic mix of residents there, lots of rental buildings and some condos, easy access to LRT, stunning river valley and city views and services close by.

I don't mind these three buildings. Like or dislike, what are the chances of any of these buildings being started in the next few years?

Ya, the original renders we saw show 29 floors as well.

And that stepping idea was ridiculous. Who says a skyline has to have smooth transitions to new heights? It's like they're afraid of anything too bold. They just want everything to blend in. That's small town thinking right there.

^ I think it's going to be a lot easier to market condos right on Jasper ave across from the Valley in the near term, and hopefully that generates some momentum to continue the development north towards the LRT station. Getting that section between the LRT and the river valley developed will be key to densifying the whole area around Commonwealth IMO

and that is something we need to understand here... an AGA will not make 20,000 more people move downtown, a new rink will not wave a magic wand and bring 5 new 200m towers... we need comprehensive plans that are well thought out and funded to make larger scale changes simultaneous to the smaller more tangible ones.

I find myself wondering if Lafarge and the other industrial stuff on Stadium Road will ever move out.

Having stayed at the Richmond Airport Marriott a couple years ago, it was interesting to see an neighbourhood that served the airport in an industrial fashion transition to serving the airport in a commercial fashion. With talk about revamping the Stadium LRT stop and construction underway on the new Commonwealth leisure centre, and high-density development on the way, I wonder if there might be an impetus for those landowners to sell in the next 5-10 years.
