^Yeah, like I said, there is probably others I didn't think of off the top of my head. You don't need to prove it to me.

While most of those are fine buildings (Lessard House coulda been better) ... we still are FAR behind other cities, and it would be (IMO) foolish to think otherwise. Simply that.

Yes I did have to prove it because oftentimes your perspectives are a tad off. Sometimes you just need to be 'corrected'.

Are we behind yes, is curtainwall the be all end all in terms of achieveing the ultimate pinnacle of design...no...

Oh, and the curtain wall on Lessard House is good, its the split-face concrete block that takes away from the overall design.

Excuse me? I don't need to be corrected by you. I very well know what I'm saying, and my statement is everything in truth. I even said there is probably others. But do we need to go point by point and list each one? No that's a little pathetic.

I know Robbins, EPCOR, CCIS, Lessard and la la la la la have curtain walls. That doesn't change my opinion though, we are behind.

Get over it. I apologize my opinion isn't the same as yours .

Every time I go to Vancouver I see how stale curtain wall condo buildings have become. That's what happens when developers jump on a fad and ride it out to the extreme.

I do like curtain wall for certain applications, and yes it does look really good when applied nicely but it is far from the be-all-end-all of cladding.

I'm still waiting for our Stella. Very nicely done, no curtain wall.

^ Curtain walls aren't the be all and end all, but we could use more of these....
(credit facades.com)

Now, would the rampant use of curtain walls in Vancouver have anything to do with their resistance to seismic activity? Glass curtain walls look sexy (in areas) - but you can essentially use any material, right? Steel, aluminum, glass, etc...

I've always heard they are a better envelope to use because of their ability to move better with air force and building movement... please educate

^Yeah, AGA is a fantastic building that isn't curtain wall. Same with Art Lofts and Seventh Street Lofts.

But that doesn't mean we couldn't use more glass here either. I personally love curtain wall, but there are other methods. And we are definitely behind in curtain wall, and while it's not the only solution to good design, we definitely need more of it here in Edmonton.

and this is exactly the type of posts that make me wish you would post less...

You do need to be corrected, often, and when someone rightfully corrects you, you turn into a cry baby.... you're worse then Vid on these forums.

AGA has curtain wall, all the windows mixed in with the swooping titanium are a "curtain wall" system.

Council approves downtown condo towers

Cigdem Iltan
Edmonton Journal

Tuesday, July 07, 2009

City council voted Monday to approve two condo towers planned for the downtown core.

But a 27-storey development at 97th Avenue and 106th Street did not pass without argument.

The $45-million Raintree condo complex will cause significant changes to the character of a heritage district around the legislature grounds, said David Craig, a resident of a building next to the development site.

"I think we should stop calling it the heritage district."

The Raintree will have 160 units when it is built, which will increase traffic congestion in the area, Craig said. "The higher population density of this development will only exacerbate the present problem of ingress and egress of traffic, and the potential for problems for emergency vehicles to access this area."

Coun. Ben Henderson expressed concern that the Raintree is being built in an area without a lot of easily accessible amenities. He pointed out the building will sit at the bottom of a hill, while LRT and bus service is at the top of the hill closer to downtown. Despite pointing out the area is currently "not walkable," Henderson voted in favour of the Raintree.

Coun. Linda Sloan praised the Raintree developers for presenting a unique proposal to council. All councillors voted to approve the project except Tony Caterina. Kim Krushell was absent.

Councillors unanimously approved a proposal for a $30-million development at the east end of Jasper Avenue and 83rd Street called the Tango. Architectural design for the 29-storey project will ensure there's no impediment to the view of the river valley, Coun. Ed Gibbons said.

So it seems both were accepted by council even though they were not supported by EDC. That's interesting.

^^ It looks like the design for Raintree has changed quite substantially from what was originally proposed. Unsure about Tango.

Either way I quite like the look of both towers.

^^^this article ****** me off for 2 reasons:

1. heritage district? where? when? Sure it overlooks the leg and sure the house/apartment that is apart of it are designated now, but when i look around i do not see an old montreal, a gastown, an exchange district.... WTF??!??!?!

2. Henderson calling the area 'not walkable' .... ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?!? Yes, there is a hill.... but that makes it not walkable? Great bus access on 97ave, behind it at the 107st BUS station, LRT 2 blocks away, downtown 2 blocks away?!?!?!?!

When is this city going to man up and shed its little boy small town thinking and image?

I just dont ******* get it.

^ I've never heard of that particular area being called the 'Heritage district'

I don't understand the walkability argument either. It's what, four blocks from Jasper ave ? OMG!

I don't know enough about podiums to comment, but those are townhouse units from what I remember. That's at least new to this type of project in Edmonton.

I like the tower, I think it looks better than that TransAmerica building.

I think that's exactly what he means by "not walkable". You have to walk to a different neighbourhood to find shops.
