The current 351 only shut down for 2hr 10min too (starts 4:10am, ends 2:00am), as they are taking passenger for the early morning/late night trips to/from the garage. If they still do the same in the fall, the route would've started at 3:37am and ends at 3:05am. Assume it takes ~10min to get in and out of the depot, I wonder if it would be actually cheaper just to give an operator 1.5 hours of overnight layover time at Crescent Beach than to drive all the way back.

They cut it down in half for 401 in the morning. What time does "mid" start?

Richmond 'STAR TEAM' will patrol areas around Canada Line stations

Special patrol of Richmond RCMP detachment

Erin Loxam / Jim Goddard RICHMOND (NEWS1130) | Thursday, June 18th, 2009 3:55 pm

Street area around Lansdowne Station (Canada Line photo)

RICHMOND (NEWS1130) - The City of Richmond doesn't want any trouble associated with the Canada Line when it opens (expected in August). Richmond's RCMP detachment is going to have a special patrol--called the 'STAR TEAM'--to look after the area around the Canada Line stations.

Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie says Transit Police will look after security on the train and in the stations, and the RCMP will patrol around the stations. "These three constables on the STAR TEAM would be specifically responsible for the areas around the stations, concentrating on the 250 metres closest to the station."

Brodie says they want to kick-off the opening of the line with a heavy police presence to let people know their security concerns are being addressed. He says special consideration was also given to the Canada Line station across from the River Rock Casino, which will have a community police station staffed by both the transit police and RCMP.

Any idea why the 405 & 430 routes have such large headways?

Translink should've been in charge of making the signage/branding for the line.
I'm just catching up on this thread as I have been in Europe for the past few weeks. I totally agree that the signage is very disappointing, but I am not a fan of signage on Skytrain either. The whole system needs to be rebranded. It is very confusing and strange to use contrasting symbols for the Canada Line and Skytrain. The average user will not know or care that there is a difference in rail technology. Translink needs to develop a consistent graphic theme for all of its services. A single recognizable symbol needs to be developed for Vancouver metro system.

i don't think that the way out stickers are a mistake. after all, there was room for them to be placed there. it was probably more a matter of adding the additional colour so that they stand out. furthermore, they look fine, nitpickers.

It's not about whether they look fine or not, it's about developing a consistent brand to our rapid transit system. All of the major subways in the world have this... we don't.

^ yea, let's hope that they will spend some money for that.

The blue tiles for the columns are not so attractive.

I like it actually... it gives a little more definition and interest.

Anyways, Canada Line has finally posted information of their June 27 Open House that I mentioned a few posts down (as well as Allen).

I snapped this tonight looking east down Davie towards Yaletown-Roundhouse. The reconstruction surrounding the station appears to be getting very close to completion.

yes and i understand your point; however, we are not "suffering" without this branding. the way some people discuss these moot points can become quite annoying when compared to "real" problems in the one's life or the world in general. seriously, some people need genuine perspective on these matters. the end of the world is not nigh because of a bloody sticker.

i enjoy this forum but how can one not get sick of people reiterating the same small complaints over and over again. at least have the decency to state your point and then get over it after a while.

Surprisingly... if you go to Seoul in South Korea... you'll find that different operators have different brands for what is technically a single subway system with several lines.

talking to an employee of the Canada Line at the one open house he seemed to without sdaying it clearly that he worked for Canada Line and was politically saying he didn't think too highly of Translink and the "other" lines in the city

so the people who work on it probably don't see it as all "one" and they want distinction

I just wanted to make a post to let people know some things about the Canada Line. There are a lot of rumors and musings out there, and seeing as I've been hired to work on the line, I can answer give some information that might clear things up:

1. There likely will be a premium fare to the airport. It hasn't been confirmed how much it will be, but it is likely to be more like an add fare, and not something crazy like $10. Airport staff will NOT pay premium fare. That being said, there are 3 stations on the YVR 'arm' of the system - Templeton, Sea Island Way (outside the Air Canada hanger), and Airport. Travel between these 3 stations will be free. There will be a park and ride at Templeton.

2. The official opening date that has been so far made available to the public is Labour Day Weekend. In reality, we are currently geared to go live BC Day Weekend.

3. The Canada Line is NOT SKYTRAIN. Not in technology, not in operation, not in staff, etc. The Transit Police and the Fare System are the same, but the staff/operations/parent company are NOT. There will be differences that you will notice on this system that will make this clear:
our uniforms will be different (green and black)
attendants will be MORE VISIBLE than skytrain attendants (we will be in most stations, most of the time - there will ALWAYS be someone at Airport station)... customer service is a *major* focus for the Canada Line
and
because we are paid by Translink not through fares but through quality/train availability, our stations will be cleaner, more free of graffitti, and better maintained (otherwise, we will not get paid by Translink). Note that this isn't necessarily a dig or comment on skytrain operations/maintenance, I'm just pointing out that our incentive to make money is based on a completely different system than the skytrain (fare revenue only), so there is direct incentive for the stations/trains to be clean and well maintained.

4. There will be MORE farechecks than on the skytrain. Many more... BUT.... there are no turnstiles... all stations are designed for them and they are slated for installation late 2010/early 2011.

5. The trains are larger than skytrain trains (twice as wide), and hold more people (a full train can hold about 400 at capacity, plus there is luggage room). They are coupled in pairs, and will remain in pairs only. (You cannot connect more than 2 cars). This is how the cars are designed.

6. Trains will run 3-4 min apart, except for the 2 richmond arms, trains may run up to 7 minutes apart in off-peak hours. There are LED signs on the platforms in every station telling you the realtime arrival time of the next 3 trains.

7. Do you have any questions? I can answer best I can!

8: Forgot to add: It is FAST! Waterfront to YVR is approx 24 min.

Edit: If you are interested, there will be a Station Open House - on Saturday, June 27th at Oakridge - 41st Station. The station will be open between noon and 5 pm and will be part of the Design for Diversity Event. You will have the opportunity to access the station and board two trains sitting in the platform.
You may or may not have access to see it. http://community.livejournal.com/vancouver/4351603.html

They're sure doing a good job of training their employees on talking crap about Translink/Skytrain..

I'm really digging this, it's quite promising:

And of special note:

I've never had a problem with the cleanliness or noticed much graffiti if any at Skytrain stations. The trains can be a bit untidy by the end of the day with newspapers and the occasional drink container, but on the whole the trains are pretty clean.

If one wants to see dirty, poorly kept stations one only needs to look at the C-Train stations here in Calgary. Windows will remain broken and boarded up for weeks (Chinook); likewise with out of service escalators; platforms and tracks can be cluttered with rubbish for days at a time and many of the station interiors go months between floor cleanings. A few months ago they actually closed some stations to give them a power cleaning as the backlog of maintenance was so bad.

Skytrain stations are positively pristine in comparison.
