Agreed!

Funny story. I was driving in Skyview and my 3 year old was getting excited because she thought we were going to her firends place. Her friend lives in Silverberry! Blindfold and drop me into any one of these neighbourhoods and I would be hard pressed to tell which one I'm in.

Great experiences for sure, but after the daily routine sets in and the novelty wears off it's not the same, you start to see the flaws, you start to miss things about North America. I'm not saying we shouldn't adopt ideas from European cities, I'm just saying, don't sell North America short.
We will have to agree to disagree. I too have lived in Europe and I would say that the quality of live is higher. I didnt have, and didnt need a car. Without a car in Edmonton or Calgary or most NA cities, its not very livable.
Many new neighbourhoods do not even have a commercially zoned site.
If speaking of "livable cities" our Cities are simply not designed as such. They are designed for the auto and not the person - for the most part.

Two levels I believe- They're adding generators and cooling capacity to the building.

One I think. I'll ask a guy I know who's been doing electrical on the project for the past couple months.

Edmonton's population grows by 30,000

EDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning.

"It shows the resilience of our city," said Mayor Stephen Mandel.

The population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.

Mandel said he was surprised by the increase.

"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said.

Edmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.

This year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city

Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium gets new recreation centre

EDMONTON - Dirt was ceremoniously shovelled into the air Wednesday with the official announcement of construction on the city’s new recreation centre at Commonwealth Stadium.

The new facility in north-central Edmonton is part of a long-term $300 million plan for rec centres to be built in all ends of the city over the next 15 to 20 years including ones in Clareview, Mill Woods, and the west end.

“This is a commitment we need to make because we have to have facilities within each of the communities that our children can enjoy, our families can enjoy, and act as anchors to make sure our communities are solid,” Mayor Stephen Mandel said at the opening ceremony. “This project we hope will help reinvigorate much of the area.”

The centre, which costs about $100 million, is being built on the stadium’s existing sports and fitness centre, and will feature a new swimming pool, field house, and areas for community and program spaces, acting as a community hub not only for sports but for social activities as well.

“This has been a long time coming,” Premier Ed Stelmach said. “We’re going to see some great things in the future.”

The centre is expected to be ready by 2012.
