Last evening the gf and i headed over to Tzin for a bite and glass of vino... i really love this spot and while a little pricey it is about perfect. I was impressed at the street traffic on jasper but surprised at how the free press patio was empty, blue plates empty, and karma (99ave/105st) empty. Do people not enjoy a nice drink on a nice day anymore and just rush home?

Everyone was out in the river valley on their bikes last night!

On a related note the Canada Cup mountain bike race is being held on the 13th down in the River Valley. Rode most of the course last night. Fun.

^ No kidding, the path along RVR was packed. As much as it was a little annoying for a guy who likes to ride fast, I was really happy to see so many people out enjoying the weather.

And whoever says MacKinnon Ravine is underutilized has never been there.

Where do you find the course?

Anyone else notice that the bugs have gone from non-existent to crazy in the last few days? Last night I had to stop to make some adjustments to my bike, and I was instantly swarmed by mosquitoes. And I've caught more than a few mouthfuls of aphids. Stupid nature.

Ah, found it:

From Alberta MTB Racing

For that section along the kinsmen, it's funny that they seem to be sticking to the road? There's a trail along the river in that section that is fun, if a bit annoying and slow.

The success of LMP is important to the overall success of the quarters.
bingo.

I think one of the reasons the city might be going the funicular is because they want the Quarters to succeed, but aren't developers. They want to spend money to make it happen but they can't force people to build. Besides this is feasibility planning, not construction. Find out if it can even happen, now, rather than finding out it's not feasible 5-10 years down the road or something.

I plan to speak the the people at the Special Projects office for the Quarters soon to find out what they can do to help development.

You and I both know a feasibility study will include more than that. Costing, system choices, maybe some geo technical, and some concept designs.

Doesn't it help show that they are serious about the Quarters?

a funicular and the success/start of the quarters have a very low correlation IMO.

take that money and actually do a capital project IN THE QUARTERS such as a park, rehabilitate the sidewalks/streets, work on acquiring the armature etc.

a funicular would be icing on a cake but you need a cake to put it on.

For example, ask someone who lives in Rome, or anywhere in Italy or France if they think Calgary (if they had visited calgary) is a livable city and where it should rank.

QUOTE]

People from Rome don't think about Calgary (or Vancouver for that matter). I was talking to some of the people who work in the Italian consulate in Vancouver a few months ago and they hated Vancouver (can only imagine what they would think of Calgary).

Not bashing either of these cities because the same goes for any other city in Canada and most of North America. We just don't know how to build good cities. Rome was the world's first great Metropolis and IMO a great example of how to build a city for the enjoyment of life.

"We just don't know how to build good cities. "

generally speaking we 'know how' but do not... i mean why would we want to disrupt this:

Yep. 100% Agreed!!

For example, why would people just go up the funicular to reach East Jasper . and do what? get shot up?

I hope this study does feasibility numbers into about 2015...

My point was the writers of the Economist have a much different, and IMO incorrect, interpretation of what a livable city should be

Not necessarily. Us North Americans tend to look at European cities as the way to go, and yes there are many great things about European cities, but living in them isn't the same as visiting in them. I lived in Barcelona for a summer and in London for a summer, I also spent a month in Paris. Great experiences for sure, but after the daily routine sets in and the novelty wears off it's not the same, you start to see the flaws, you start to miss things about North America. I'm not saying we shouldn't adopt ideas from European cities, I'm just saying, don't sell North America short.
