EDMONTON — Mayor Stephen Mandel wants the city to look at building a downtown skateboard park to provide more recreation for young people and help keep them out of trouble.
The mayor said Wednesday he was “shocked” to learn what he described as a “harmless and healthy” activity isn’t allowed on Churchill Square.
“My God, in Edmonton there’s enough kids skateboarding downtown,” he told reporters.
“If we’re going to make downtown comfortable for kids, let’s find a place to build a skateboard park.”
While he wouldn’t say where he thinks the facility should be located, Mandel said it would be part of his push to use education and other approaches to make Edmonton safer.
“Any place where there’s young people, we should find opportunities for them to have fun things to do.”
Coun. Ben Henderson supports the idea, saying it might be possible to create a skateboard park and a playground in the little-used plaza on the south side of the Stanley Milner library.
“One of the things we have to recognize with downtown is that if we want people to live here, we have to make it a family-friendly space,” he said.
“You should be able to be a teenager in the heart of the city. You should be able to be a kid in the heart of the city.”
