So I got an interesting flyer in the mail that made me think of the ATB drawing of "Finesse" (if anyone remembers that one). Turns out Finesse is having a huge sale because they are closing their doors forever for "redevelopment". Might be nothing, but thought I would speculate.

That's awesome. Should've been done 20 years ago, but awesome nonetheless. I can think of at least 10 other streets that could use tree planting.

I hope you're wrong. Stepping sucks. Impressive skylines are abrupt, not gradual. That tango design is really nice and should've been approved. Maybe EDC is just set on rejecting everybody at least once.

That really sucks. I was looking forward to this project going ahead. On the other hand i'm glad the developer didn't compromise and come back with a 15 storey version. I think they had the height just about right to emphasize the curvature of the tower. The design sort of reminds me of the Tower at Olympic Stadium in Montreal.

I really hope that this won't be one of those situations where the store closes up and then the redevelopment stops before it starts. The last thing we need is a big empty retail building at one of the city's busiest intersections.

Looks like the Raintree is going to be doing a redesign - or being shelved. Similar to Tango, no?

"The Committee reaffirms that the base of the tower requires a fundamental redesign. The current design of the base is not successful as a mediator between the historic buildings and the tower, nor to the tower itself.
The Committee will not entertain further presentation until substantial redesign is realized."

from EDC PDF

... interesting.

Well, it did look rediculously boxy and didn't blend well with the modern tower design or the historic building next door. I think they should just go for a modern looking podium to match the tower and contrast the historic buildings. We don't need another Icon warehouse podium here.

No, their comments say nothing about its height, which is appropriate for its location.

Their issue is how the podium integrates with the adjacent historical house and tower, which I agree needs some reworking. It isn't impossible to do, just look at Sobeys and the Strathcona Library as modern examples.

^ I meant more on how they want a redesign of the building to fit the needs of the area, not specific stuff like height vs podium designs where they are obviously different in terms of what EDC was talking about.

Tango was a bullet that needed dodging. Height was nice. Design was poor imo

I liked the tango too. I'm disappointed it was rejected as is.

Every time I look at Edmonton Google Earth it gets better and better. More buildings showing in 3D and done so well. Not sure who to thank for all this effort but it is an amazing effort. Who or whom are the heros?

I wish we could get the high-rises running west down Jasper. There are so many there it would creates a grand sweeping entry as you zoom in. I know this is a lot of work.
