I never said the Home Depot specifically was trying to be urban. I know very well it follows the same - typical - suburban platform. Nothing different really. What I was saying is Currents fails to be the urban lifestyle centre it promotes itself to be.

I was also saying an urban form like Home Depot would be able to work in Edmonton but to put it more clearly, Currents is not the spot for that.

I agree with you in that Currents is just a suburban neighbourhood - but trying to be urban when it's really sucking people into buying there. One of their lines is "putting a little city in the suburbs", it isn't true what they're doing, but that's what they're trying to market to people.
Tell me where Home Depot 'claimed' they were being urban in Currents? I'll leave that up to you.

^ I don't think Home Depot ever claimed to be 'urban' in Currents, I think Currents is claiming to be the urban one.. giving, on first impression, that it's going to be a densely developed commercial spot, by using the tagline "putting a little city in the suburbs" and by showcasing photos like this, this, and this.

That said, anyone who claims Currents was actually going to be "Urban" forgot to look at the masterplan for the site, which is quite plainly not "Urban" and just another suburban shopping hub.

According to this list posted by Cranespotter in the Canada section, Edmonton has the 3rd highest building permit values for all Canadian cities so far for 2009, behind only Toronto and Montreal and the highest per capita spending of all the major cities

Unless you actually live in the middle of this complex.

[SARCASM]
I'd love to get a condo right next to "Main Gate Brewing Company"! I would sit on the patio, get hosed, and look at the cartoony people walk past the fountains. I hope I don't hit them when I walk home with my 4x8 sheet of plywood that I bought from the nearby Home Depot.

Kind of hard to comment since the images you posted is the area that hasn't started construction. It doesn't yet exist. Marketing cliches aside, the area isn't trying to be urban, it's just promoting a more "walkable" (and I say this loosely) suburban retail development.

Thank you!

I don't see how hard that was to get, CMD_UW, as I'm sure you've seen the Windermere website and what they're (falsely) trying to be. Walkable usually is urban, Jasper Avenue is walkable - you saying it isn't urban? C'mon they go in the same pot. By promoting and saying they'll be walkable - and by taglines like "putting a little city in the suburbs" - yes they are trying to be urban. It's like comparing Golden Delicious Apples to Granny Smith Apples.

^ Anyways, I think we all agree that Suburban Shopping Mega Centers suck, but they serve their purpose; and may it be that they are just selling plastic to the masses, we can only hope that one day that business "model" gets replaced by something more desirable. To be honest when I first saw information on the currents when it was first announced... it did come off sounding very dense, and very different. Then I quickly found out that it was just all marketing spin... from the build out diagrams to the images off the front page; one can determine that it's not a little city in the suburbs. Anyways, no longer need to go on about it.. it is what it is!

Side thought: It's interesting to note the cause & effect these types of developments have had on me personally.. It's actually mega centers that drove me to stop shopping at them.. and start shopping downtown and support local business ... I wonder how many people share my sentiment?

Take a breather already. Quit acting so arrogant like your the top of the world for some reason.

Any who yeah Kevin I don't like mega centres and because of that it is one of the reasons I support local businesses. So yeah I share that sentiment.

Project Description: Ground up construction of Bennett Centre Annex. Replacement of structure destroyed by fire.
The Bennett Centre, for those of us who grew up in Edmonton's public schools, is a place in the river valley where sleepovers in Grade 6 are had and all that fun stuff top learn about the environment, trees, flowers and stuff.

I had a few good memories there. I even managed to learn to tie my shoes before going there. (I admit, it did take me a real long time to learn to tie my shoes. It's one of the reasons why I am not in construction.)
