Marriott Int'l Unveils Global Expansion Plans - Update

Marriott International, Inc. (MAR: News ) Wednesday said it intends to open over 30 thousand rooms this year, expected to generate nearly 30 thousand new jobs across the world.
The Bethesda, Maryland-based company's global pipeline includes over 770 hotels totaling more than 115,000 rooms.
J.W. Marriott, Jr., Chairman and Chief Executive Officer said, "Despite these troubled times, our worldwide development pipeline remains strong, positioning us well for the eventual economic upturn. With 60 percent of our pipeline already under construction or conversion, we remain optimistic about our long-term future."
The company intends to make Grosvenor House its flagship for the JW Marriott Hotel brand in Europe. Marriott Jr. added that the company would introduce its Residence Inn hotel brand for extended stay travelers in urban locations in Europe beginning in 2011, as this brand has tremendous potential in Europe.
Marriott Jr. noted that with the upcoming openings of the Lingfield Park Marriott, London, St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel and the expansion of the Courtyard brand in United Kingdom, Marriott will continue to have a strong presence in the region.
MAR is trading up $0.73 or 3.87% at $19.82 on a volume of about 6.93 million shares.
