I am waiting to see the color / better quality version before I make my final decision on this one... hopefully now that this is out, the Star Kleenex can give us a better look at it.

Looks like United Airlines is adding a daily flight from Saskatoon to Chicago starting in July. Which is pretty slick. I am impressed with the Airport Authority and its ability to draw Airlines to the city. I guess there is lots of potential in Saskatoon.

One thing though. I think they need to think about expansion quickly at YXE. Last time I went for a flight the lineup for security was probably 200-300 people long. And the tim Hortons line is always 5 deep no matter what time of day. Plus it is the only option... I just think we are already overdue for an expansion...

More Gates, More Restaurant space, More Security enterances, More bagge claim areas. They should have one for international and domestic flights really. I mean it doesn't have to be huge, but it could certainly be bigger than what it is right now.

Holy 1960s, Batman! I hope we can get a colour rendering of it. It's not my favourite, but it could be argued that it would blend in with the late-60s architecture of TCU Place.

I think it is growing on me. Must be the Batman reference , but now I see it as sort of gothic in it's oppressiveness. It sort of looks like it might be waiting to pounce on the street. However, I still think it is likely very preliminary and will likely not look anything like it does now.

It is perhaps more interesting for me to see the corporate attempts to strong arm city council. These are the kind of issues that the media should be all over - i.e. the relationship/negotiations between the city/CP/Holiday Inn and how these might shape what is happening in the Warehouse district. Economic demands versus demands for smart development etc. I guess it is a lot easier to run fluff pieces on city council members "dreams" for downtown. Oh well.

It looks like a combination between these two hotels in Regina.

Hm, not too many visual cues as to where this is, but I'm assuming the grey building on the left is the Williams Building. That would put these behind it and just north of the existing McEwon Park towers.

Looks good. Wow the U of S is really a hotbed of construction, the rest of the city needs to catch up. Can't wait for the Lighthouse and Lake Placid's Riverlanding to get off the ground!

I'm not aware of any face lifts except for a little added saturation and sharpening that I have done in Photoshop.

Does anyone know what bigbox stores are going up right now in Stonebridge? Next to the Brick and Petland, there are two buildings being constructed. There is also a hotel, what appears to be another restaurant of some sort(?), and a Co-Op gas station. Hopefully the zoned business park south of the mall gets some good commercial there.

I'm not surprised the provincial government didn't want to co-locate their facilities with the city's new police station. From an urban planning perspective, its a shame. An expanded remand centre means there will be fewer people working in north downtown (in the short term), and more people working up in the north industrial. Why is this bad you ask? Well, a majority of employees at the expanded centre will no doubt drive to work because transit service for the north industrial is pitiful at best.

As well (some of you may disagree), locating a provincial remand centre in a highly visible location (25th St. Downtown/warehouse district) was an opportunity to serve as both a deterrent to the criminally inclined, and an educational tool for the wider community. Most people don't know, or care to know where we house our 'criminals' (out of sight, out of mind). Not the way I would have it.

As for locating a 'jail' downtown (safety concerns), its no different than where the current remand centre is located, adjacent to the Silverwood residential neighborhood.

City to get $87-million remand centre
Corrections system in need of fix: report
Saskatchewan News Network; Regina Leader-Post March 13, 2009 Comments (2)

A damning report detailing how a group of inmates went undetected for months as they chipped their way through the wall of the Regina jail shows the system is "in need of a fix," Saskatchewan's corrections, public safety and policing minister said Thursday.

"That is why we're committing today to taking action," said Darryl Hickie, as he announced the government will spend $87-million over four years to construct a new remand centre in Saskatoon, in addition to $9.4 million this fiscal year for security upgrades in adult facilities.

"We have evidence to show that there were a host of reasons why those six inmates could escape that night and many of the reasons we know result from long-standing reasons that are, for the most part, system-wide," Hickie said.

The government issued a formal response that pledges action on each of the 23 recommendations made in an external investigation team's report, which included a call for more staff training and a bigger management presence at the centre outside of normal working hours.

Hickie said the new remand centre for Saskatoon will be built at the site of the correctional centre
and should alleviate some space pressures as well as allow for better management of offenders on remand -- especially those charged with serious and violent offences.

"Saskatoon with its overcrowding now and its central location in the province makes sense as a starting point for a remand centre," Hickie said, adding Regina will also be able to move inmates to Saskatoon.

Saskatoon police Chief Clive Weighill had hoped a new correctional facility would be constructed close to the site of the expanded police station planned for the city's downtown, which would eliminate the need for police to have their own holding cells for new arrests.

Nevertheless, the decision to expand the provincial jail's remand unit at its current location is good news for the city and badly needed to address crowding issues, he said.

"I think there will be some room there for us to maybe work with them and negotiate on a future role for our detention with that new remand centre," Weighill said.

"So I'm going to contact the (corrections) minister and see if that would be maybe on their radar. We're hoping . . . that will open the door for us to house our prisoners there on the weekend."

That's a well planned development, sounds and looks good Meridian.

I especially like the linear park through the centre of the residences. The positioning of the top right (northeast) building is curious. What are those boxes/single storey connections/buildings between the residences...they appear to have green roofs

The residences look fantastic! They will really inject some life into that area and hopefully jump start further development of that area, as well as encourage more residences to be developed.

I really like the architecture on 3rd Ave and well it would be a shame if any of those old heritage buildings were knocked down for development. Although there are several hideous pieces of architecture along that road that i would personally burn myself. With the redevelopment of the street happening this could be an opportunity to really secure the heritage feel with innovative modern structures like discovery plaza.

Being on campus most of my time I have really began to obeserve it as a unique situation. The u of s could be a model for sustainable development for Saskatoon. High density development with large green spaces, all accessible by bike, foot or VERY short transit trips. Council should really observe this and apply this type of development to the city. The u of s does not have available land to expand onto so they are implementing infill which is fantastic! I just thought this was an interesting thought

I know one of the buildings next to Petland is HomeSense (Which I believe is owned by Winners), and the other one looks to be Ashley Furniture Warehouse... The separate building looks to house a few different things, one of them is Taco Del Mar I think (which I gathered from the SmartCentres website). I also know a Starbucks is going in there somewhere. And like you said, it is a hotel going up behind there, a Sheraton Four Points, which is slated to open August 20th.
