I always thought the Roughriders should be located in Saskatchwan's biggest city. As we are getting to the point now where Taylor Field is reaching the end of its useful life.. I would like to know if there are any thoughts on the subject?

^^ I don't think it would fly, the history is down in Regina, I think the team would loose a lot of support if they made the move, besides, this would never ever happen.

I would much rather see Saskatoon get the Oilers AHL team than the riders.

Speaking of football, has anyone seen anything on the upgrades to Griffiths?

Yes but I thought that the blades had good support in the toon. Do you see the blades and Roudrunners (well the name may change) co-existing and both doing well?

^^ No, I don't, I believe if we got an AHL team, everyone would loose interest in the blades. And besides, the support that went to the blades would be needed by the AHL team to fill the C.U.C. every night.

The other option that has come down lately is the WHL is going to force Moose Jaw to either overhaul their entire building or build a new one. Town council is going to vote on it and if it doesn't pass it looks like Edmonton will get that franchise.

Remai buys Legion landmark

Members have a year to find a new building

A Saskatoon landmark built with the sweat equity of local war veterans will be sold today to the development company that already plans to build a luxury hotel and spa on adjacent property at the River Landing site.

Remai Ventures expects to make a formal announcement of its deal to purchase the Royal Canadian Legion Hall on 19th Street East sometime today, after the sale is officially closed, Remai Ventures' director of real estate, Curtis Zwack, confirmed late Tuesday.

Zwack did not disclose any details of the sale or indicate the company's plans for the site.

Brent Burns, provincial executive director for the Legion, said the organization's provincial office in Regina has already approved the deal, though he's not at liberty to discuss the sale price or any other details.

Legion Branch 63, which currently occupies the building, has not yet found a place to relocate, but its members have a year to do so before they have to move, Burns said.

The decision to sell the building was made at a branch meeting on Dec. 14, and at that time members were told Remai Ventures was offering $1 million for the property, according to a Legion member who did not want to be identified when he spoke to the StarPhoenix in late December about the pending deal.

The city's last property tax assessment valued the building at just over $250,000.

Built in 1929 by local veterans of the First World War, the hall is equipped with one of the last horse-hair dance floors in Saskatchewan.

It has no official designation as a heritage site, but many local history buffs would love to see the building remain standing.

Coun. Elaine Hnatyshyn, whose ward includes the hall, tried last year to spearhead an effort to turn it into a veteran's museum for memorabilia held by local families.

Her fellow councillors agreed with the joint-venture idea, but it fell flat after the city pitched the plan to Legion members.

"I can only say I'm disappointed," Hnatyshyn said Tuesday, noting the hall's location and design were not impeding development at the River Landing site.

"It could have been such a positive for Saskatoon, and it could have been a positive for that Legion," Hnatyshyn said of the museum concept.

She doubts Remai Ventures will leave the old hall standing, which will be sad news for many senior members of the branch who opposed the deal, Hnatyshyn said.

"I know some of those people were hoping to appeal to the provincial (Legion) authority to stop the sale, but obviously that didn't work."

I imagine they will be tearing it down. It's not the most handsome building, but brick is somewhat of a rarity around here. It would be nice if they could incorporate it in the new development, but I don't see that happening.

Groups propose inner-city development

A Saskatoon non-profit organization that provides affordable housing is celebrating its 10th birthday with a big wish.

"It's time that we think a little bit bigger and challenge ourselves and the larger community . . . we need to think about how can we create change in the (core) neighbourhoods," said Len Usiskin, manager of Quint Development Corp.

Quint, in partnership with organizations such as CHEP Good Food, plans to develop what they're calling a community enterprise centre that would include a grocery store, a branch of the Saskatoon Public Library and dental and medical clinics at a site on 20th Street between avenues K and L.

The organization has come a long way since 1995 when representatives from the Pleasant Hill, Riversdale, King George, Caswell and Westmount neighbourhoods were determined to reverse the decline they were seeing in Saskatoon's inner city.

Quint began by helping low-income families purchase their own homes through co-operatives. It also purchased and renovated a couple of apartment buildings for families who didn't qualify for the home ownership program.

A home for young moms and their children and another for young men in transition have also opened in the past few years.

Now the organization is preparing to embark on its most ambitious project yet: Station 20 West, the $15-million community enterprise centre with a major housing complex involving the Saskatchewan Housing Corp.

"The core neighbourhoods have suffered from disinvestment and growing disparity," Usiskin said in an interview at Quint's 10th birthday celebration at King George School on Thursday night.

"The direction and development and the solutions coming forward are coming out of the identified needs that the community itself has identified.

"They're not coming from people coming from the outside who don't live there and don't understand the dynamics of the neighbourhood."

The University of Saskatchewan dental college is planning an outreach clinic run by faculty and senior students at Station 20 West. It's a good fit for both the community and the students, says the dean of the college, Dr. Jim Stakiw.

"It allows our students to have practice in all aspects of dentistry from the young to the old," he said.

The dental faculty has thrown its support behind the outreach clinic and equipment suppliers have agreed to donate state-of-the-art equipment, Stakiw said.

Next, he needs to secure funding through the university's administration.

The Station 20 West group led by Quint is also trying to secure the money it needs.

The organization, which applied to the federal government for $1.8 million in centennial funding through Western Economic Diversification, will likely need to raise between $5 million and $6 million for construction of the enterprise centre, Usiskin said.

He is confident the federal, provincial and municipal governments along with private corporations and individual donors will support the project.

Work at the site could begin as soon as this month, and Usiskin expects the complex to be complete within the next two years.

The much unloved Riverfront is approaching full height

If the stalled renovation of the King George Hotel (foreground left) ever gets
going, it'll make for a nice little stretch of urbanity, at least by local standards.

The Miller Building reno was a nice little, if minor, addition to the office space inventory. It had been a Country Wide Furniture franchise.

Ta da. The only tenant at present is the commercial realtor behind the project. Still space available kids.

The TCU Place (formerly Centennial Auditorium) is undergoing expansion,
doubling it's convention floor space so we can compete for the big shows.
Watch out Red Deer.

This former parking lot on the corner of 1st and 22nd will be the new home of
the Affinity Credit Union. Haven't seen a rendering but I've heard told it
will be 3 or 4 floors and include an 80 space parkade. Here's hoping they
don't put the parkade front and centre. They very well might.

Then of course there's is the Galaxy Cinema, filling in a block long empty lot.
Though you can't see from this picture, the foundation is pretty much all in
place. Once this is up, well, downtown will never be the same.

The just sold Legion Building. Not the most beautiful, but I wouldn't cry if
they kept it. Probably won't cry if the zap it.

I'm sure they'll take the neon with them to wherever they relocate. If not
I'll take it.

River Landing...it may not look like much, but they've made a ton of progress
along the riverbank. It's looking not too bad. Much better than the gravel
boat launch it replaced.

Then a small project on the east side (JW will know this one)...
I had great hopes when a local ice cream parlour purchased this building. It
was in pretty bad shape, and I was hoping the replacement would be something
nice

...(cue 'Price is Right' foghorn)...

So it's not finished yet. A sizeable patio is bound to be in the plans but I
can't see what they can do to save this one.

There's a lot of suburban growth going on too, but who cares about that?

Good God, man! Those white trees lining the river like that are beautiful. Just imagine if the buildings beyond were more distinctive (modern, historic, a combination of both, whatever). That'd be a million dollar shot.
