Not enough room in that location, and the environmental impact would be tremendous!... in a bad way. City Creek is right there.

The Lexie is an eleven-story residential building that is proposed for the corner of 2nd South and 3rd East. There is a rendering on the first page of this thread that Viperlord provided.

How large are the floors gonna be in the Lexie Towers?! "The top four floors will consist of 50 penthouse condos..." 50 penthouse condos on 4 floors seems kind of like a lot.

It just makes me wonder how serious a project this is given their rendering looks like it was made in MS Paint and their website has a number of grammatical errors.

Renderings can be very deceptive. Let's hope that the team that Scott saw on the Lexie site means the project will be under way soon. Then we'll probably get a more detailed rendering.

I wonder how much of this natural habitat and the natural systems associated with this land are being disrupted for the sake of a Natural Science Museum. This should have been part of the development which is going on the Stadium Parking lot, or preferably somewhere downtown. At least that way there would be an option for reliable mass transit.

Stadium lot, perhaps, but I don't think a University museum should be off-campus. Downtown isn't a realistic option when the University already owns the land adjacent to existing campus.

UMNH staff have been extremely sensitive to the environmental impact that the construction will have on the area. Last fall, staff members removed, one by one, dozens of sensitive native plants from the site and are nurturing them in greenhouses until the building is completed, when the native plants will go back where they came from. Not sure if they have taken any precautions re: animal life, though.

The museum's EIS is available here: http://www.umnh.utah.edu/pageview.aspx?id=19850

I can kinda see your point Urbanboy... While this a disruption to the actual trail system, it does not have a huge impact on the natural habitat, because it is located close to many of the Research Parks buildings, as well as the road leading to Red Butte. The trail system already occupied this area before, i doubt there was a large population of wildlife located that close to a road with moderate traffic, and the heavily used trail system.

Not to mention the Red Butte amphitheater which often has very loud music playing in the summer. So the museum there is not worse than what already in place.

They seem to be doing a decent job of blending it into the surrounds as the rendering depicts, besides the parking lot.

While im not saying it doesnt have any impacts, they are not significant impacts... And as for transit, Trax is not all that too far away, people can walk it, they are just often too lazy too. And if thats not enough the University shuttles and Uta has bus systems very close.

A friend of mine told me today that we should be getting some BIG news on Utah World Trade Center in Late May-early June.

She wouldn't tell me who she got her info from, but I was wondering if any other forummers "in the know" have heard similar rumblings... I'd hate to think my strings are just being pulled lol

I knew it would happen sooner than later, but I wasn't aware that it was being pushed as soon as May/June.

My understanding is that the WTC is a huge personal priority for the Gov. He is intent on squeezing the soon to be open, direct Narita Tokyo route for all it's worth. The WTC and a full court press on expanding our Asian trade is at the top of Huntsman's wish list. He is intent that the Wasatch Front be a major North Am. hub of Trade with Japan, China, and India. There is no Governor in the nation, with better connections, stronger ties, and a more complete knowledge and understanding of Asia. As we know, the Governor usually succeeds when he sets his sights on something.

I'm almost beginning to wish he would relent on his committment to seek only two terms. I would like him to serve a third term

I'm hoping that the tower will be a new tallest and an iconic design.

As Salt Lake City's green mayor keeps going to Washington, it appears worth his while: He's carting home Washington green.

Fresh off his fourth visit with the Obama administration, Mayor Ralph Becker seems to have successfully snatched a meaningful portion of the federal government's $787 billion stimulus package...

... Inside City Hall, operatives privately wonder how Becker made the short list of mayors invited to the White House -- though no one in the mayor's camp is complaining.

Simon says Becker's resume says it all.

"They look at him as a triple or quadruple threat," he explains, pointing out Becker is a big-city mayor, has experience as a legislator, holds expertise in urban planning, and oozes environmental credentials. "He's got a lifetime of relevant experience in terms of urban affairs."

.
This article is completely misleading. That money is not going directly to the City. I take most articles in the tribune with a grain of salt.

It's earmarked for the city and those projects but is distributed through the state to the city.

There is definitely a lot of wildlife around research park and upper campus. I saw a bobcat on the west side of Red Butte Gardens, next to the creek while jogging on the shoreline trial last spring. I have also seen a fox, several rabbits and squirrels, and of course MANY deer, oh, and a moose. So yes, The UMNH will have an impact, but I do think the developers did a pretty good job of designing a building that won't clash with the natural environment and is fairly environmentally friendly.
I can see how their thinking drew them to the conclusion that the museum and Red Butte Gardens can be a synergistic draw, but being closer to public transit would have been nice. Maybe the city and University could get a bus or shuttle route going that links a trax stop to the museum, and while they are at it they could make it a loop that stops at the museum first, then heads over to hogle zoo and This is the Place State Park, then back to trax, so anyone going to any of those four locations could ride public transport there. Granted, an individual mom taking 3 kids to the zoo from Sandy probably won't want to ride two trax lines then a shuttle to get there, but I could imagine that some people would be interested.

Like I said, don't trust the article. While some money is earmarked for the city, it is nowhere near the amount listed in the article. For example, the transit money is for UTA. UTA can do what they want with it, whether it is used to build a N Temple viaduct for light rail or a new maintenance facilty. The City will lobby for UTA to use the money in SLC or to take existing money and pour it into SLC. But we are not going to see a downtown street car or circulator even started with this round of stimulus money.

That would be great if it's true. Even with this downturn I still think there's a big enough demand for office space in downtown for there to be another office tower.
Can't wait to hear the news come May or June.
