SLC mayor mines federal stimulus - Four trips » Becker's face time with Obama pays dividends.

http://www.sltrib.com/ci_11769787

As Salt Lake City's green mayor keeps going to Washington, it appears worth his while: He's carting home Washington green.

Fresh off his fourth visit with the Obama administration, Mayor Ralph Becker seems to have successfully snatched a meaningful portion of the federal government's $787 billion stimulus package...

... Inside City Hall, operatives privately wonder how Becker made the short list of mayors invited to the White House -- though no one in the mayor's camp is complaining.

Simon says Becker's resume says it all.

"They look at him as a triple or quadruple threat," he explains, pointing out Becker is a big-city mayor, has experience as a legislator, holds expertise in urban planning, and oozes environmental credentials. "He's got a lifetime of relevant experience in terms of urban affairs."

I could make some snide comment that it's nice to have adults back in control of things, but that would be wrong, wouldn't it?

Yes it would be wrong since it would be very un-adult like.

Is this funding coming directly to SLC or will it be trickled down through the State?

The full article makes it pretty clear that it will go directly to Salt Lake... got to love mayor Becker!

No... it would be right!

Economically tough times but progress can now be made on many fronts that were ignored for far too long.

I read it the same way as well. I asked the question since I was under the impression that all funding would trickle down from their respective state governments.

I commend the agressiveness of SLC's mayor.

Wow! I didn't realize how close we are! Hopefully this passes (for the sake of tourism and attracting outsiders both private and commercial).

You gotta love Becker!

I'm just glad that I don't live in Louisiana (or one of the other few states with a partison Republican governor fighting the stimulus). 4 out of the 5 are in the South for some reason (Idaho is the only western state). That is odd. I have always sensed a division between western and southern Republicans. I mean, Huntsman is very Republican, but he's still taking it. Maybe it's just that western Repubs are more moderate than those in the south. I honestly haven't got a clue, I'm just speculating.

PARK BUILDING MAKEOVER REVEALED

Recent removal of the scaffolding from around the Park Building has revealed significant restoration of the 95-year-old limestone and terra cotta. Both historic materials have been carefully cleaned and repaired, and many elements have been anchored to the building structure to minimize seismic risk. The decorative parapet was entirely rebuilt with a new stainless steel structure. Severely deteriorated limestone, originally quarried in Sanpete County, was patched with matching repair mortars and a more durable limestone from Wisconsin. Copper sheet metal flashing now protects more surfaces and will help the building shed water and preserve the limestone.

Many historic windows have been restored or have received new sash with insulated glazing, and all other windows have received minor repairs and a coat of paint—but their full renovation will be in the future.

On the interior, fire protection systems—both detection/notification and sprinklers—have been installed in a majority of spaces. The inconvenience to building occupants has allowed a much-improved life-safety situation for all.

Currently wrapped in protective plastic, the bronze statue of John R. Park has been fully restored and reinstalled on a new, matching terra cotta pedestal. Reinstallation of the restored granite stair treads and new granite pavers beneath the portico will allow the front entry to be reopened in April. Some final aspects of the re-roofing and the re-landscaping of the site will complete the effort and will be finalized in time for Commencement.

I just got back from my first trip to NYC.

Not carded once. They have this crazy method called "free pour," where one bartender told me, "you look like you want a lot of Jaeger in your Jaegerbomb (I did)."

Fantastic restaurants on EVERY street. Huge buildings EVERYWHERE.

People who walk.

People who know how to drive near people who walk.

Ugh, we've got a long way to go...

LOL, two remarks to this.

1) SLC never will be an NYC, if you want to be like NYC your best bet is to move to NYC

2) the grass is always greener on the other side....after a few days in NYC you would learn to be just annoyed with drivers as you are in other places.

Finally, NYC has a history since 1624 and was established as a port city...SLC was established 1847 (over 220 years later) and is landlocked. So give us a couple hundred years and a canal connecting us to the Pacific before the comparison is too harsh

This made me think they should put an amphitheater here...

i mean you get this view, so its a win win, there just is no parking haha
When they first built that little structure that they store road salt under, I totally thought it was going to be a little amphitheatre. I was disappointed when it wasn't.

FYI, I live across the street from the sight of the proposed Lexie Residential tower. Well, today there was a whole team of surveyers on the plot, and what appeared to be business men of some kind, walking the sight with maps, etc. Maybe they're preparing to break ground.

Thats exactly what i thought when i saw it, but disappointed that it wasnt. I think its a pretty good location for something like an amphitheater or something of the sort.

Some thing like the Greek or Hollywood Bowl in LA would be awesome!
