Downtown Van, despite some flaws (people tend to nit-pick them), is pretty much the best large scale case study in reurbanization and urban design in this generation.

dmonton's federal wish list comes to $2.4B

EDMONTON - Edmonton has identified $2.4 billion worth of projects that could start immediately if federal funding becomes available in Tuesday's budget.

These include the $825-million extension of the LRT from downtown to NAIT, $462 million for new buses and $50 million to revitalize 118th Avenue.

"I'm very pleased the federal government is going to be investing in cities. The devil is in the details. We will see what the details are," Mayor Stephen Mandel said Monday.

"There will be no end of things we can place the money into. We just have to make sure we use it wisely."

Edmonton's wish list is part of a national campaign by municipalities pushing for greater infrastructure spending.

Monday's throne speech promised new investment in infrastructure, but no details.

Calgary's list includes a number of projects that could be started within 120 days, ranging from affordable housing to new LRT lines to green initiatives.

"There really is a bit of an extensive menu for the kinds of options available to the Government of Canada if they do want to invest in municipal infrastructure," Mayor Dave Bronconnier said. "If the government is looking for shovel-ready projects, we have a number of them."

Bronconnier said whether a stimulus package benefits municipalities depends on how it's structured.

"We're not going to do projects for the sake of doing them. We want smart projects for areas of infrastructure that are needed in Calgary," he said.

Requiring cities and provinces to match the cash would require "a hard look," Bronconnier added.

"Municipalities have already done their job in terms of contributing to infrastructure and keeping the economy going. We've been there on the front lines," the mayor said.

Yeah, the thing is the government has only leaked info of $4 billion in new spending over 2 years. IE drop in the bucket.

Here is the Artisan condo that went to EDC on the 20th. This is proposed for 111th ave and 91 st, just to the west of the Esks office by Commonwealth stadium.

While not horrendous, it can certainly come up a tier.

The renderings aren't good enough for me to pick out the details.

Interesting. Its not BKA, the architect recently departed from the firm. Ziola was the 'Z' in BZKA. Does anyone know how it went? There are some elements to this that I like and some I don't.

I agree. However, the shared parking-public space is something that you see in many places throughout Europe. Essentially parking shares the same space as the common areas (sidewalks and patios).

That area along 111th is so run down. I'm glad to see a project for that area that is of higher calibre than what we've typically seen around there.

I just can't see it the same way. In Europe its forced to be like that due how compact areas are.
If there are in fact provisions for store fronts and espeacially for patios, I am more open to the idea.

Like I said, I can't grab the details from these renderings...too vague. Massing seems, meh? Windows seem small? Its really hard to say from what I am seeing.

Yes development in that area is excellent!

I'm pretty sure it's all parking though according to the rendering. Just with signs blocking the entrance/exit, and small channelized laneways to almost ensure right-in,right-out car movement.

The best parts are the roof deck and retail. (and could the courtyard parking be intended for the retail, with resident parking underground?)

Aesthetically though, it will be meh or worse. Architects here need to learn that vast expanses of white stucco with punched windows is just not a good look. Mix in some other materials and break things up a bit.

/\ For the area it's being built it, I could care less. My one concern is the parking right in front and their lame attempt at masking it.

The more I look at it, the more I wish they would have built the courtyard facing the rear.

Stilll, given the area, I don't mind the BZKA usual design features.
