Saskatoon's Barry Hotel No More
Old Riversdale hotel finally coming down

Reported By Tim Amey
Posted December 17, 2008 - 3:07pm

The Barry Hotel has finally met its maker. Silverado Demolition will be hard at work all week tearing down the old Riversdale hotel. The Barry has been a source of aggravation for both residence and police. Saskatoon Police recorded a multitude of calls there over the years.
The man behind the controls of the excavator has a connection of sorts to the Barry. Dennis Hoehn is a former Saskatoon Police officer who used to haul people out of the Barry all the time. But he is not shedding any tears while he rips it down. “A lot of people are saying there glad to see it go down, “he says. “And it’s old…no insulation, nothing... just brick.”

Another person happy to see the Barry gone is Dave Rose. He co-owns Rose’s Furniture across the alley. He says the neighbourhood has really cleaned up since the Barry was shut. “No more drugs, no more booze. It’s really cleaned up the area.”
He says people are now more comfortable walking down the sidewalk.
Silverado says it will take at least a week and a half to take the building down, then another month to clear out all the rubble.

Anyone know what's going down at the Stonebridge shopping centre right beside Petland?

They were starting up on the frame today.

According to Smart Centres website, it's a retailer named Home Sense.

Ah, OK... they're owned by Winners. Regina has had one at the Vic East big-box development for a few years.

Some more downtown thoughts..

1. The city put through funding for the downtown bus terminal. I think that will be a good, if not spectacular, addition to the city.

2. The downtown needs more fast food. Seriously. There are so few places to go for quick, cheap eats outside of Midtown Mall. A Robin's or Tim Horton's in that bus terminal, as rumoured, would be a big improvement for working stiffs who don't want to pay $15 for lunch every day.

3. Speaking of the bus terminal, it's going to be built over a parking lot on 23rd and 3rd which may make the parking situation critical. I know many on here are not fans of parking in the core, but it's becoming a huge issue for people working in and visiting downtown. It's about time for another tower, or to expand the ones that exist already. If the above-ground Midtown Mall lot is going to exist anyway, why not make it a tower?

4. There is a huge deadzone north of 24th and east of 3rd until Spadina. The only retail and food outlets are the Parktown Hotel and a few dinky and rarely open convenience stores on ground level of residential towers. I would love to see a retail/restaraunt mini-mall open up in that area, where over a thousand people live. I think a great location would be on the corner of 24th and 5th, where a couple of dilapidated low-rise apartments are now. I also want to see the city force the planned condo towers on Spadina and 24th to have ground-level retail. There needs to be more going on in that area.

At least 18 months since casting the vision for the River Landing Village downtown mega-project, developer Lake Placid is about to start digging.

The Calgary developer has taken out its city excavation permit. It allows Lake Placid's contractor to begin digging as soon as it gets fencing around the site, said Bob Baran, the city's manager of building standards.

Digging and stabilizing the hole could take four to six months, Baran said.

"It's a big job. When you drive by, all you'll see is a big hole."

The hole will be deep enough -- nine metres at its deepest point -- to accommodate several levels of underground parking. It will span the entire site, which sits between Second and Third avenues, 19th Street and Spadina Crescent.

As the hole takes shape, a contractor drives pins into the ground at an angle away from the hole to stabilize the corners, Baran said. If necessary, a crew will shore up the hole's walls from the inside with timbers or a form of concrete shot against the walls.

Some major building projects, such as EnCana's construction in Calgary of what would be Western Canada's tallest building, have been put at risk with the tightening credit market. Lake Placid has until Jan. 19 to pay the $4.8-million price to the city to close the purchase of the site.

So, here's to hoping they're able to get that money together!
Hello,
I'm new here. I've been reading this blog for a while now. Interesting stuff here.
I like to take pictures of the city and will try to post some when I have a chance.
Nice to see River Landing will start construction soon. Hope it looks as good when it is finished as it looks in the pictures.

Question

I was downtown yesterday and noticed that a fence had gone up on the corner of 2nd Ave and 25th Street, and there's a digger on site. Does anyone know what's going up on that site?

On another note is there a bookie that can take my bet as to whether river landing will go foreward before the said date as per dig permit?

I have a distinct feeling rolling around in my gut that says Lake Placid is gonna pull a bailski because they can get the loan.

I think you might be right. I've had that feeling for a while. Although it has been extremely cold the last week. They have until Jan 14th to pay up so I guess we shall see.

BHP Billiton opens Saskatoon office
By Cassandra KyleDecember 23, 2008

Walking down the second-floor hallway to Gord Graham's new office, it's easy to think there are more construction workers employed at BHP Billiton Inc.'s home base in Saskatchewan than potash mining experts.

Labourers are using the elevator to move drywall from floor to floor at the Innovation Place building and, outside, men in safety vests are discussing the day ahead. But at the far end of the second-floor corridor, a sense of quiet opportunity replaces the power tools busy at 421 Downey Rd.

This is where the world's largest diversified resource company is setting up for a long-term stay in the province and Graham, project director for potash development, is at the helm of what could be a huge new potash project in Saskatchewan.

"The mines, if there are mines that come out of this, are going to be in Saskatchewan, so we thought it would make very good sense for the office to be here," Graham said of the company's latest project base.

What the director is referring to is the Jansen project, a promising land claim that could produce between four million and 8.7 million tonnes of potash per year. The project, located just east of Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan's Lanigan mine, is still in the pre-feasibility stage, a very early part of the process that could eventually lead to mining operations.

'BIG BUSINESS' POTENTIAL

Graham, who works with 14 BHP Billiton colleagues in the three-month-old office, is cautious when talking about the potential for Jansen.

The project would be located on one of the properties the multinational company acquired when it completed the purchase of Anglo Potash Ltd. -- and its potash permits covering 1.8 million acres in Saskatchewan -- in July. It's impossible to predict what could become of the project, he said.

The outlook, however, is positive enough for the company to invest in an office and spend $103 million on exploration in Saskatchewan -- mostly at Jansen -- in its 2009 fiscal year. BHP Billiton's calendar runs from July 1 to June 30.

"If things continue to work out positively for us, our view is that we hope it can become a big business for BHP Billiton," Graham said.

"As I said, lots of things have to happen in due course and due process before we get to that point, but we wouldn't have pulled people together from all over the world and brought them here and wouldn't be spending a lot of money if we didn't believe it had the potential to be a good business for us."

Despite the economic slowdown, the company is prepared to continue its studies into Jansen's potential, he added.

"At the stage we're at right now, we think it's still a good project and we're going to continue with exploration."

RESOURCE CENTRE

BHP Billiton is among a number of resource companies that have recently opened offices in Saskatoon. Potash One Inc., for example, is headquartered in Vancouver, but has opened a field and operations office in Saskatoon to support its exploration and development work for potash solution mine amenable properties in the province.

Hathor Exploration Ltd., too, has set up shop in Saskatoon. Between three and four people work out of Hathor's downtown office on any given day, said Stephen Stanley, the uranium exploration company's president and CEO.

The junior company's Midwest NorthEast discovery in the Athabasca Basin means meetings and research in Saskatoon instead of its headquarters in Vancouver.

"Saskatoon is the place to have it," Stanley said of a Saskatchewan office. "It's great for bringing people in for presentations, it's where a lot of the other uranium companies are as well and most of our guys live in Saskatoon. It's sort of the centre for the resource business."

Add to that a "proactive" provincial government and friendly business atmosphere and Saskatoon is the place to be when opening up a mining office in Saskatchewan, he said.

"The city has treated us excellently, the government of Saskatchewan has treated us unbelievably well and we are quite pleased with Saskatchewan, I must say, in general," Stanley said.

TIME WILL TELL

Back at BHP Billiton's 6,000-square-foot base on the University of Saskatchewan campus, Graham said the company's move to Saskatoon has been positive for both the corporation and his family. Moving from Yellowknife, where Graham worked at BHP Billiton's Ekati diamond mine, to Saskatchewan's largest city has been a treat for his young children, he said.

"The provincial government, the business community in Saskatoon and Saskatchewan in general has been nothing but supportive and welcoming to us. We've felt great with just about everybody we've met," he said.

For now, the tone of operations in Saskatoon -- besides the whirring of electric drills -- is positive for BHP Billiton, he said. It's just a matter of time, and a lot of analysis, until Graham learns how long his new office will play a role in Saskatchewan's mining industry.
