Very unfortunate. My deepest sympathy towards the workers families.

I don't know the full story, but I can't help but think the safety line was not being utilized by the worker. The reason I think this has much to do with observing the workers travel along the scaffolding at the King George. The workers almost always connect their safety lines, but I have noticed a few times where they weren't connected, one slip on a icy wood plank...and that's it.

I had the same issue, on question 2 I do believe it is, you probably typed something in the other box which has also selected other, thus, giving you 4 answers and it asks for only 3 so it wont let you move on till you deselect one of your answers.

I am unable to provide you with a solid construction date. Who is building it? I assume you mean general contractor, that I don't know, probably the same as the other Wal-Marts...Dominion Construction?. The developer is SmartCentres, same as the other Wal-Marts.

SmartCentres hasn't indicated when they intend to begin construction. Note, that Wal-Marts can be constructed, up and running rather quickly (5-9 months, weather and labour supply permitting).

I could see the new Wal-Mart starting next summer and finished early 2010. I suppose a decision may depend on how their Confederation Mall location is performing too. As well, Confederation Mall recently changed owernership and announced extensive renovations, perhaps major renovations would coincide with a departing Wal-Mart.

Also remember, Remai Ventures recently (September 2008) purchased land and signed an agreement to construct a Best Western Hotel in Blairmore. They have 2 years to begin construction according to the terms of the agreement.

The Shaw Centre Phase II (e.g. the pool) is expected to be completed summer of 2009.

Remai believes the hotel will appeal to visiting swim teams competing at the Shaw Centre.

How soon and how quickly the Blairmore residential development proceeds may also indicate how anxious Wal-Mart is to begin construction.

just a rumor but one of my friends dad works with the city (forget where) and my friend said that there well be a new mall that will be built in rosewood and it will be the biggest mall in saskatoon, i will try to get more info on it

Indoor Mall? Something like West Edmonton Mall? That would be nice. I must say that I'm not a big fan of big box malls. Especially in the winter.

Hello, I've been lurking for a while, but decided to join in the discussion. I've lived in Saskatoon for a few months, and lived in other areas of Saskatchewan most of my life. Does anyone know how long the downtown area has looked roughly the same? There seems to be no modern buildings, other than the River Landing that is going to be built.

Regina seems to have a mix of older and modern glass buildings in its downtown core, which I something that could benefit Saskatoon.

Interesting rumor. However, the Rosewood land use plan completely denies the possibility of Saskatoon's biggest mall.

Perhaps the adjacent lands, either directly south or northeast of Rosewood is the correct location???

Regardless of the location, an enclosed shopping mall seems very unlikely as developers are still pushing big box commercial centres in most North American cities (e.g. locally, Blairmore is touted as the 2nd coming of Christ).

Of course, there's the possibility of changing the current land use designations for Rosewood to allow for a large shopping centre if a developer believes there's a market to serve.

If the above scenario is indeed being considered, we should expect opposition from a collection of citizens groups. Respond appropriately.

We lost some real gems, and are now left with pink stucco and brown brick exteriors.

Indeed, more glass would be welcome in Saskatoon...hint hint, you ex-pats from Regina should be courting our elected officials.

What was the reasoning behind that? Unless something is done soon enough, Saskatoon is going to be left in the dust in comparison to some other cities.

It was a combination of factors, some say it's the governments fault, others blame it on economic conditions.

Whatever the reason, I suspect decisions were made under a mindset of fear and denial, a powerful combination, supported by an abundance of built-up resistance specifically applied during changing economic conditions.

EDIT: lol, I am kidding...the reason for no glass boxes is because there has been little demand for such concentrations of corporate functions.

I heard in the news that Lake Placid has finally got all their city permits approved and can begin digging for the River Landing project. Now we just have to wait and see if they decide to delay until spring or start breaking through that frozen tundra!

River Landing developer readies for big dig

At least 18 months since casting the vision for the River Landing Village downtown mega-project, developer Lake Placid is about to start digging.

The Calgary developer has taken out its city excavation permit. It allows Lake Placid's contractor to begin digging as soon as it gets fencing around the site, said Bob Baran, the city's manager of building standards.

Digging and stabilizing the hole could take four to six months, Baran said.

"It's a big job. When you drive by, all you'll see is a big hole."

The hole will be deep enough -- nine metres at its deepest point -- to accommodate several levels of underground parking. It will span the entire site, which sits between Second and Third avenues, 19th Street and Spadina Crescent.

As the hole takes shape, a contractor drives pins into the ground at an angle away from the hole to stabilize the corners, Baran said. If necessary, a crew will shore up the hole's walls from the inside with timbers or a form of concrete shot against the walls.

Some major building projects, such as EnCana's construction in Calgary of what would be Western Canada's tallest building, have been put at risk with the tightening credit market. Lake Placid has until Jan. 19 to pay the $4.8-million price to the city to close the purchase of the site.
