In that case, there is plenty of vacant land downtown. The vacant lot on Princess and Logan; Graham between Hargrave and Carlton ("rock star parking" at the MTS Centre); the vacant lot on Graham between Garry and Smith (where CP currently parks some of their fleet), the triangular lot between Notre Dame, Ellice, and Smith; Donald and York; Hargrave and York; South Main... the possibilities are boundless south of Portage.

Or they could get an agency to help them buy up a bunch of little properties and go on a demolition spree. That would be much more suitable.

From Waverley West and Beyond;

IKEA AND SOME THOUGHTS ON PLANNING
A lot of people are pretty excited about IKEA coming to Winnipeg. It's always nice to have a new place to purchase your household furnishings and knickknacks.
I just hope a campaign doesn't start asking little kids to empty out their piggy banks to contribute to paying for the road widenings and car oriented infrastructure we now seem to require. I also hope the people involved in planning this new mega big box development that is 1/3 the size of Polo Park and may include a WalMart Superstore, have given some thought to how people will be able to get there by Winnipeg Transit. It was a bit of a shock to get a press release an hour and half before the final Capital budget meeting announcing the widening of Kenaston from Lowson to Taylor Avenue which is NOT in Plan Winnipeg and not in the Capital budget or five year forecast. Apparently there will be a fast tracked "open house" and a public hearing process as part of the requirements to amend Plan Winnipeg to allow the development to proceed. Judging by the enthusiasm of the Premier, the Mayor and the Economic Development officer of the city, we are only going through the motions of having these public processes and the decision is a pretty much a "done deal". This southern part of the city has suffered from a serious lack of proper planning and has become a sea of unattractive big box stores and endless parking lots. Transit planning has not been much of a part of this reactive car oriented approach to development. In question period today, I asked the Mayor to let the public in on what is happening with the proposed Plan Winnipeg review which has been overdue since 2006.
For at least a year, we have been told that the process has begun. Yet there has not been a single public announcement outlining who will be involved in the process, what sort of public input there will be, time lines or any other info. My hope is that early in the New Year, there will be more information and opportunity for Winnipeggers to participate in the review of the most important planning document we have which is Plan Winnipeg.

Or a Nazi machine gun's nest going up on the corner of Broadway and Balmoral...

Or the new buildings on Higgins that make Thompson look like Barcelona...

Trueviking, your parking image is the greatest thing in the world. You need to have your own blog.

Awesome map work you did there! I can tell that red is surface parking (I knew there was an abundance, but this really illustrates that fact).

However, I'm wondering, what does the blue and yellow colours represent?

It would also be interesting to note which of surface lots have been created by speculative demo'ing and which ones have been there forever.

It probably would really highlight the point that Winnipeg's downtown is a fine example of urban "un-densification".

Perhaps a new slogan for downtown could read "Winnipeg, 80 years and counting of knocking over buildings for your parking convenience"

It should then be sent to the media whenever anyone publicly denounces the "lack of available parking downtown".
