^ I would imagine that Bass Pro Shops is probably a safer bet compared to Cabellas. Cabellas would likely build near or at their existing store at Polo Park.

This is good news. I enjoy fishing, and it seems that Winnipeg has been extremely under served in terms of fishing supply stores. The only decent one we used to have was the Fishin' Hole on Main St. When they moved to Trashcona, the quality of the store went way downhill, and I haven't been back since.

Considering Winnipeg's proximity to the fishing mecca's of Northern Manitoba, NWO, and the Red River, having more dedicated fishing stores seems to be a no-brainer to me. Especially one that the American fishing tourists are already familiar with.

I think he meant the Delta (former Holiday Inn). The Sheraton closed and is now being re-converted to apartments.

bass pro shops are mostly a southern us retailer. they aren't even in minnesota or any other norhtern state. however i do see they have future stores opening in montreal and calgary, so maybe they are making the move north. they too have restaurants in their stores.

present locations

The developer has said he has been in talks with two American retailers not yet in Winnipeg - so my bet would be that one would be a Bass Pro Shop.

Bass Pro, and that other one called Calebra (sp? sorry, I probably butchered the name). That Calebra I heard has confirmed they will be setting up shop in Winnipeg.

That store that I mentioned that starts with a C is absolutely HUGE in the states; MONSTROUS! Kind of like a Walmart for Sports enthusiasts. Generates tons of business.

CABELA's, the one I talked about a few posts back. They bought out SIR in the city and announced the Peg will be their canadian hq. they retrofited the SIR store on ellice but nothing like their stores in the states. When i go to grandforks, the kids and I spend 2 hours just looking at everything.

another big one popular with peggers in GF is Bath Body Works. it's a smelly fruity lotion type store.

and of course there's numerous other retailers than have no presence here so it can be a number of them.

1.5 million sq ft?

Bass Pro Shops?

Perhaps another "Mills" mall in the suburbs, like the Cross Iron Mills crap near Airdrie?

Gordon Bell wants downtown sports field
CJOB's Robert Holland reporting
12/18/2008

Local politicians are asking for help to get a new downtown sports field for students at Gordon Bell High School and the University of Winnipeg.

Currently the schools don't have any area for students to play sports outside. There is an effort to convert a parcel of land at Portage Avenue and Broadway into a playing field even though the land has already been bought by Canada Post for it's downtown mail processing facility.

Pat Martin, MP for Winnipeg Centre, is asking the public for suggestions for alternative locations for Canada Post to setup shop.

Kathi Neal of Canada Post says they have spoken to the school division and the province about a potential land swap but so far no properties have been identified that would be appropriate.
