I believe this is to indicate when the legislature is in session (I could be wrong though)

^That would be quite the hour to hold session. Usually it is in the afternoon (2pm 3pm - sometimes at about 10am...)

My theory is that the Tories have locked McFadyen up there. Do the flashing lights spell out "h-e-l-p" in Morse code?

I'm quite sure nothing spells progress more than forcing somebody to do something because you think it's the better choice. This video shows such an example. We should be as so lucky as to be able to bask in the achievments of such a country and their pure ambitions for progress, regardless of the feeble, uneducated cries of the populace:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xu_f0pujSTY

I for one, love those meatballs and eat them often ... but this is the wrong thread for such diatribes. Should have got the $2 mac&cheese for the kids ... comes with choc. milk (that's fun to clean up too).

Not that I know of.

At one time, the Golden Boy's torch was lit to indicate this, but since he was put back up there, there is no longer a light bulb in his torch (they had to seal this up as water was getting inside of him and caused inside rusting because of it).

Now, the Golden Boy is constantly illuminated at night by flood lights that are around the top of the dome.

So.. the flashing light...

My guess: there was some sort of séance, or a Masonic ritualistic 🞵🞵🞵🞵 happening up there (I wouldn't put it past the perverted bourgeoisie in Manitoba, who probably thought it'd be fun to combine Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut with the Free Press' Hermetic Code) . In fact, I believe there was a new moon that night.

I made a point of looking at the Legislature from my balcony a few times last night... either the flashing wasn't happening, or I had the wrong angle on it.

^^^ I used to live at 71 Roslyn. The lights light up when the Leg is in session (or to call the House to order or something like that). I called the Leg one day to inquire when I first saw them.

Good to know, thanks guys. I'd prefer it if it were a masonic 🞵🞵🞵🞵 going on up there, oh well.

When will McCaskill take cops out of cruisers and actually put them on the street?!

Not construction related per se.. But a noteworthy point on downtown safety none the less.

Police at Portage Place shooting
By: James Turner | Winnipeg Free Press

Winnipeg police are currently on scene investigating the shooting of a man in the bus shelter attached to the Portage Place mall.

The incident occurred just before 1 p.m.

Const. Blair Good said the victim "suffered a gunshot wound to the midsection, the lower body. The male has been taken to hospital in critical condition and one male suspect has fled on foot. "

Witnesses said they heard a loud bang like the sound of a window cracking and then saw a tall, skinny man run from the bus shelter and vanish south up Edmonton Street.

The victim ran from inside the shelter into the mall clutching his stomach, doubled over and obviously in pain. He was conscious at the time he was removed on a stretcher from inside the mall.

A few minutes after the victim left the scene, squad cars left the scene and were believed to be in pursuit of the shooting suspect.
An interesting comment...

THE BARRICADES ARE DOWN!! THE BARRICADES ARE DOWN!!

The covered walkway and concrete barriers have been removed from in front of the Hydro tower. There is ovbviously more work to be done to the fronting sidewalk and retail but you get a good feel for the intergration to the street.

P.S If this old news then reread the top line without CAPS and exclamation points.

For a second there, I thought the barriers at Portage and Main were down in a surprising move.

Still, that's good news!

Well in a perfect world they would be. I predict in 5 years they will be and the intersection will be a pedestrian scramble.(fingers crossed)

I was actually getting used to only two lanes on Edmonton and two on Portage. There's too much road capacity downtown. Leave Smith and Donald both four lanes one-way, same with York and St. Mary, and turn everything else two way with more on street parking, bike lanes, wider sidewalks and more landscaping.

I compepletely agree with this point of view.... there are far too many nervous nellies screaming the sky will fall if the city modernizes. It makes be sick. Adding a couple highrises will not add much noticable traffic to the area, but will add some density to the area. This was only an excercise in rediculous NIMBY'ism. This issue has hindered the city to far too long. There are many examples of other mid-highrise residential towers throughout the city .. guess what.. everything is fine.

I agree. That is probably the most practical, inexpensive way to help revitalize downtown.
