Yes yes, yet another long time lurker, first time poster.
The website mightnightrambler was referring to was:
http://www.hussrides.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=58&Itemid=103

The tower depicted here definitely looks like something from an amusement park. And the description given by Hartle is frighteningly similar to that of the websites.

This is a complete dissappointment to see this is what SkyTower will be. In fact I find it almost to be a waste of space. Imagine the mechanical problems involved with this once a few blizzards rip through Saskatoon. It would be disasterous! I was really hoping for something with a stationary viewing point like Calgary tower or the CN tower but something VERY modern and innovative.

Welcome to the forum!

Yeah, the Sky Tower in the link you provided appears very similar to the description. The first thought that came to mind: Disneyland...not too terrible, but certainly not an architectural gem, rather it is more of a ride/experience (which may be the primary objective of the destination complex, or simply the view of some proponents; function over form, where have we seen this scenario played out before? Recent Remai proposal anyone?).

If I had to choose between the proposals I might opt for the other interactive venues over the Sky Tower. An ideal proposal would try to combine the tower with one or more of the other ideas, but there may be space constraints as well as uncertainty with respect to available public and private financial contributions.

Maybe we're too demanding and have excessively high standards for Saskatoon ....nah

midnightrambler, to your comment on how useless the Calgary Tower is now compared to back in the day...I understand what your saying, but, that is largely due to its location in the downtown (e.g. not on the riverfront). Our tower would be along the river, which should prevent another building(s) from blocking it in the future and thus leaving it useless (partially useless). Ours could be an architectural showpiece for the skyline, just like the Bessborough and Spadina churches.

I still hope an observation tower might be proposed for the top of the Broadway Bridge (better views)...maybe we could have two, one at River Landing, and one for Broadway linked with a gondola system to transport people between the two towers, definitely strengthens the whole Cultural Crescent concept...just dreamin' aloud peeps
Yeah I agree I was just making a moot point with the Calgary tower. However, I think that we would be wiser to forget the observation tower and proceed with other developments which could have an observation deck, at least for the time being, it seems to be a more realistic goal.

[QUOTE=SASKFTW;3870984]

So you've seen the proposals for the destination complex...how does the Sky Tower compare to the previous observation tower? I suppose Sky Tower is taller and thinner, anything else?

I think they should try to combine all of the proposals together, not sure how that would work though (space constraints?).

I haven't seen the proposals, only talked to the proponents. As for the Sky Tower, I didn't have much info to work with in the first story. You'll find a MUCH more indepth story in Friday's SP. Ok that's enough of a plug.
and anything has to look better than that Millennium Falcon-looking design they trotted out a few years ago for the destination centre!

I wonder if anything is being planned for the old Extra Foods site. It has been a whole year now. I hope it doesn't stay a parking lot for years to come. A nice condo development would look great there too.

I keep thinking about my recent trip to Toronto. They have a lot of condo construction going on right downtown (right along Younge and College). I know it's not fair to compare Saskatoon to Toronto, but putting up condos right in the city cente would really add to our downtown. It seems that most of the condo development always accurs in the north part of our downtown, but having a few towers right in the centre would really be awsome. There are plenty on empty parking lots (corner of 3rd ave and 22nd st, the old Extra foods site, corner of 2nd ave and 24th st, corner of 4th ave and 20th st, empty lot on 2nd ave beside the BMO,,...........etc). Maybe if we keep talking about it, some developers out there will think about it.

THERE OBVIOUSLY IS DEMAND OUT THERE.
Do you guys think that some people out there actually read our forum? I know the 28 storey light house project isn't going on 3rd and 22nd, but it's close to 30 storeys and it's mix use.

I think city council should consider a 50-60 storey observation tower similar to the CN TOWER in Toronto, the Stratospher in Las Vegas, and the Space Needle in Seattle, but a little smaller in size. With support of the provinvial gov't along with corporate support it could happen. This would add to our non excisting skyline, get people talking about Saskatoon, and attract visitors.

Obviously we don't have the need or the money to build a 100 storey tower, but a structure of 50-60 floors is reasonable.

Here is another example. I suggested this last year 05-02-2007, 10:58 AM .

I would say yes they do! As well my the letter I'm sending to council refers to this site alot so maybe there will be a bit more interest in it!!

Sure, we had Lake Placid chatting with us in the River Landing thread, and I'm sure there's a few more who are quietly observing our thread(s). SSP has few rivals in terms of active discussion for local development issues, except for Skyscrapercity, which is not as active.

I've noted provincial government email addresses for users as well.

I know this image is sometimes used to inject humor, but, it is also more closely related to reality than many would otherwise think.

Well, stretching our influence a bit don't you think

We're a centralized container of Saskatoon aspirations available at the click of a mouse from anywhere in the world 24/7...well, that's how I think of it.

It also helps that this site is indexed by Google. Search for something related to Saskatoon and you just might get a Skyscraperpage for Saskatoon (I noted this a few years ago and actively title threads/posts, and include hyperlinks as a way to drive more traffic towards the site ).

I don't see why a 40 floor tower can't go up at that location. I know most people reading this will think I'm nuts, but think about it. We are a growing city with a population close to 240,000. We don't have any buildings in this city that we can call a skyscraper. I don't see why Cameco wouldn't have a 40 floor tower build there. They could use 10-15 floors and the rest could be for other uses like condo and office space for lease.

Cameco are you listening?
I still believe in this idea!

That's a great idea...and I'm still waiting for the current crop to be built.

We'll be ready for more soon enough...Cameco becomes part of a super tall mixed use project...think Chicago's John Hancock Centre, oh so bold and beautiful!

A dose of reality is a refreshing experience once in a blue moon...now, let's go back to beyond reality.

jaysfan99, do you have a detailed list of what you want built in our city?

YES:

1: Lake Placid to start and complete the Village at River landing (completed by 2011)
2: Light House project to become reality at 30 storeys (completed by 2012)
3: Mix use 30+ storey on 22nd st and 3rd ave
4: A minor league baseball team in Saskatoon, with a 5,000 seat stadium
downtown
5: A new city library, built on the corner of 20th st and second Ave (where the Capri is now)
6: A hotel in the mall at Circle and Centre (at the east end where Zellers is now). Also add a second level on that mall, with condos overlooking the mall.

Anyone else have any more ideas? It's good to dream.

Ohh, yes,..........and please no more Remai.

Cool, here's mine, priority ordered:

1. City yards redeveloped into high density neighborhood
2. Whitewater park built at weir
3. Bus barns relocated; Caswell Hill sees additional park space, housing, and retail
4. Streetcar system for Downtown, Broadway, Riversdale
5. Cameco relocates Downtown into a beautiful mixed use tower; 70-90 storeys
6. U of S partners with a private group to build a downtown hockey arena for Huskies
7. 20th Street and Riversdale transform into higher density version of Broadway and Nutana; clusters of residential towers along 22nd Street, & near corner of 22nd & Idylwyld
8. Another synchrotron is constructed at the U of S (new generation, more powerful)
9. CFL expansion team and new stadium built on vacant lands south of SIAST campus
10. U of S develops College Quarter into a high density neighborhood
11. Large conservatory located along the river (possible additions to current Mendel Conservatory)
12. Diefenbaker Hill topped up and developed into a decent ski hill

13. All the above with at least one residential tower greater than 15 storeys erected per year in the Downtown/Inner City....That's all for now

What ever dude. You need to take a chill pill man. Like don't take life so seriously man.

I think it would really be funny if we ended up getting a 40+ tower.
Then we could pick on you more.

Well, now that the scrapping has hopefully subsided, I'm pleased to report that the car wash on Main St. (and the properties to the east as well) is up for sale and being flogged as a "Redevelopment Property". I've long felt, as I'm sure many others have too, that this is prime condo territory. Street level retail would be pretty sweet too.

Try to keep this on the QT. We don't want Remai to find out.
