I think Walmart leaving Southland Mall to a freestanding store in Harbour Landing has been a poorly kept secret. There had been talk of Walmart wanting out ever since they escaped Northgate for a freestanding store.

(Freestanding stores tend to be more profitable because they are a destination, not just a stop to browse so much.)

Continuing my randomn ramblings.....I also heard the other day that Sobeys is negotiating with Safeway to take over all of their Western Canadian Stores...if that did happen that would result in a whole lot of building issues across Western Canada as they consolidated operations....may just be a rumour but the person who told me works at Sobey HQ.
I can't see this takeover happening, but you never know.

The lake isn't filled yet, so right now it just looks like a massive condo building sitting on a hill surrounded by nothing

Thanks for the info. I presume Google Maps/Earth wouldn't have this updated to anywhere near current so no way to see it without actually going out there?

The freestanding stores are also considered warehouses. Companies get a big tax break with freestanding stores.

The satelite imagery on google maps is far too old. All you can see is dirt, and parts of the lake

It sounds like there is a lot going on in Regina. I'm hoping to see some big changes the next time I visit family down there!

I totally agree. The amount of garbage and leftover construction material in that creek is terrible. I really hope that gets cleaned up once all the construction is finished.

Ive heard they're planning to re-construct the victoria avenue bridge over Pilot Butte Creek so that the pathway system can be extended, finally connecting the north and south portions

There has been runours for a couple of years that the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs (may have changed names again) was going to relocate to Regina from Ottawa. I believe the previous Federal Gov't had made some hints that this was going to happen (good old Mr. Goodale) but the new gov't has been pretty quite on this....

One of the rumours swirling around is that this space opening might be the in for a large unspecified American retailer to come in.

As well, the Walmart moving to Harbour Landing is supposed to become a Walmart Supercentre, not a regular Walmart like what they have now in Southland.

I sure hope Sobey's doesn't take Safeway over. I can't stand going to Sobey's. Safeway has already pumped money into updating at least two of their stores in the city in the past few years. Also, I always thought they had a decent amount of customers but perhaps I am wrong.
I can't remember how many stores they have renovated, but the changes were throughout western Canada. I shop at the Vic Square location is always busy.

I have very reliable information that Safeway will be renovating ALL of its Regina stores to be of the form of Victoria Square within 2-3 years. Obviously some (25th Ave, 13th Ave, etc) have space constraints but it will be a similar idea. Southland Safeway is to be done in 2010.

Lululemon is having a "warehouse" sale at Queensbury Downs the next three days...maybe they are testing the waters to see if a location would fly here in Regina. I understand the person with the Sktn store has the franchise rights for all of Saskatchewan.

I shop at the Regent Park location and when you talk to the staff they don't think it will be renovated but they will close it instead. I hope not.

Better get pictures of all the old Safeway stores, especially the 13th Avenue location, before they are all turned into night clubs like the one in Victoria Square. Likely unrelated: the parking lot to the south and west of the 25th Avenue Safeway is being dug up.

I also like the dim lighting, its much more relaxing than the 100,000 Watt Nuclear-powered lighting systems that most grocery stores have

What was on the Safeway 25th and Albert St. location before Safeway was?

It has been there for almost 40 years I think there was a car wash and maybe a gas station immediately to the South if that is where they are digging.
