Just out of curiosity, where was the roundabout in Saskatoon that everyone is talking about situated? Thanks.

Very cool. Thanks Forsberg. I went to Saskatchewan for six years and I had no idea that used to be a traffic circle. Would be cool to see what that used to look like!

you can see in this map that 4th avenue doesn't even line up with itself going N-S, and Saskatchewan Street is offset by about a block

So no, it wasn't the work of a disgruntled traffic engineer, rather, it was the work of generations of incompetent traffic engineers

Council approved zoning changes for City Centre/old Superstore site. I do still think it's crap that Loblaws (former owner) is allowed to restrict the site's usage.

http://www.newstalk980.com/story/20080818/4357

Townhouses on McCarthy were approved at the same meeting. The Leader Post had more info on the meeting.

So the City Centre site isn't considered downtown and isn't considered warehouse. No wonder it's sat empty for so long. The city has no direction for that space.

Well at least construction is going to begin. The sooner that eyesore is gone the better IMO.

I call BS on the zoning issue for the old Superstore property. It bears repeating that the overly restrictive site reuse clause that Loblaw put into the sales agreement is ridiculous to the extreme. I ain't be very smrt, but I would suspect that Loblaw knows how valuable the site is and views anyone operating a business in their retail realm of grocery, pharmacy, photo developing, gasoline and banking as direct competition. The property sat for so long because the reuse clauses make the land mostly useless. It angers but doesn't surprise me that the City allowed such use restrictions to exist. The building should be paved over and a super paid parking lot be made for events at Taylor Field. Go local sports team!

^But it's not much different than Molson putting the restrictions on their old site as well. Frankly, all cities struggle with pandering to corporations. It just sucks that it is such a large site and given the proxmity of North Regina, Cathedral and the Warehouse area, there is definitely at least some demand for a smaller store in the grocery spectrum.

I'm all for a "Superstore is Vermin Memorial Parking Lot." I'd also be all for the City of Regina turning down Superstore's next proposal in Harbour Landing and only allowing Safeway and Sobey's there. Not that Sobey's handlig of IGA's across Canada has been much nicer. But I'm not bitter, deceptive or petty. At least not usually all at the same time.

That would never happen considering the 1 million square foot/1400 employee warehouse that Loblaw's is building at the IMF. Unfortunately sometimes you have to give a little to get alot and the multi-million dollar investment that Loblaws (Superstore) is making in Regina is well worth it IMO. That said, thankfully this site is no longer going to be vacant (hotel, restaurants, B and C class office space, etc) and will infact spark alot more activity into both the downtown and the warehouse district

I believe that is misinformation. The boundaries of the Warehouse District do include the lot.

Good enough. I was going by what the article said. I don't know what the formal boundaries are for the Warehouse District.

Oops! My mistake! That former intersection at 8th St. and Circle Dr. that we're frequently referring to was a "traffic circle", according to City of Saskatoon's definition (http://www.city.saskatoon.sk.ca/org/municipal_engineering/neighbourhood/roundabout/index.asp). Also (from what I remember), being a 2 lane, large radius circle -- intended for high speed -- with 1 or 2 lane in/egress(?) made it silly-awkward to navigate, compounded by some drivers who wouldn't follow rules to yield when necessary! No wonder I felt so uncomfortable biking on that thing!

I was wondering if anyone has been to the Dunlop Art Gallery recently? They have an exhibit on right now until Sept 14th all about Victoria Park, its history and the history of the buildings around the park. It was quite interesting.

Welcome to the forum Aslk!

I will have to go see that exibit. sounds interesting.

They have knocked down the rest of the old howard johnson in the south end. There is a massive new set of condominiums going up in the east end on that new island behind quance street. Also, on Quance street a new candy store has opened up. It has a lot more than dessarts. just thought i would get this thread going again.

Don't make it out to the east side very much - what is this "island" you refer to?

There are Two more Condos, that size, under construction in the new windsor park area too (near the cemetary, new princess auto). Personally, I hate them as they will continue to draw people away from our inner city.

How about the NW?

Has anyone heard of any more development up in the NW - maybe around the mega car dealership? A friend of mine "claims" that a Chapters, Kelseys, Montana's threesome is going up there (copy of the southend)...anyone heard this?

I also heard from a connection with the Southland mall that Walmart will be moving out of the mall and opening a new store in the SW area. They also said Stupidstore...er Superstore would be building there and that the South Canadian Tire store would be moving as well. What do you think?

Continuing my randomn ramblings.....I also heard the other day that Sobeys is negotiating with Safeway to take over all of their Western Canadian Stores...if that did happen that would result in a whole lot of building issues across Western Canada as they consolidated operations....may just be a rumour but the person who told me works at Sobey HQ.

Lot's of rumours there. Many are probably true in the sense that developers are considering these things but may not have all the conditions satisfied or binding agreements in place.

One that seems like a sure thing the the Wal-Mart in "Grasslands" the power centre south of Harbour Landing. The site plan and renderings on the city website show a box store over 21,000 sq M that looks remarkably like a Wal-Mart down to the upside down McDonalds logo. Plus I can't think of any other retail store that large.
