So your telling us that it is only an economic decision and never a political or competitive decision?

Come on now.

I find it hard to believe AC not putting a flight into YYC YVR or YYZ just to strengthen their hubs against competition.

Politics has some impact on SOME routes, but this is not as common as before especially considering AC is a private company.

Sure AC has to protect its hubs, of course that would be an economical decision protecting market share not a politcal one.

YOW is not an AC hub at all but they recently got a FRA flight and they're a quick hop to AC's two largest hubs. So it's not impossible.

You know I was just thinking, if this Port Alberta thing turns Edmonton into a cargo hub then that could have some huge impacts on passenger flights too. If AC could fill half the belly of a 767 or A330 with cargo to Europe it would be an incredibly attractive scenario. Cargo yields put passenger yields to shame.

The boys from YYC would have you think FRA is the only airport in Germany. I think I will go cause havoc on some global sites about YYC - like they do here...

Someone mentioned that AC was planning on feeding passengers through YOW onto the FRA flight rather than simply adding another of many YYZ or YUL flights to FRA. So, they might be propping up the demand in Ottawa by routing passengers in other cities through Ottawa as well. This is supported somewhat by the addition of Saskatoon and Thunder Bay to Ottawa (continuing to Montreal) this May. The demand might not be there for the route alone, but with the tag on to Montreal and the possibility of connections to FRA and eastern Canada, there may be enough demand for those flights.

Is YOW beginning to look better than YYZ (to an extent of course) because of the high fees YYZ charges to airlines? Obviously, capacity is not an issue at YYZ.

Give it a rest. FRA is a global hub airport which feeds flights all over Europe and the middle east. FRA is still by far the best chance for YEG.

You should learn something about the industry before going into little tantrums.

Oh, wow. I can't believe there are still those who think there's a conspiracy against YEG. I'm no expert, but the more I learn about the airline industry, the less I believe in any conspiracies, What. So. Ever.

YEG will get a scheduled flight to FRA eventually, whether it's going to be in 2009, 2019 or 2029.

Patience. That's what we all must have.

Totally depends on the market, there's tons of factors including demand, competition from other airlines, types of traveller (ie: number of executive travellers vs. leisure travellers etc). And yields vary route to route as well. A high yielding route out of YEG might be a low yielding one out of YYC and vice versa.

I think it's more that there are already multiple daily departures to Frankfurt from Toronto, and due to the nature of transatlantic flying, they all leave at roughly the same time. If they want to add capacity into Frankfurt from their overall network, they could add another flight from Toronto, or they could add a flight into Ottawa, freeing some of their existing capacity in Toronto for other connections, sending some feed into Ottawa from cities further west, and by doing so establish a new route. A brand new route is also more likely to generate more demand than adding capacity to an existing route.

The point I was trying to make, bringing the situation with YOW up, is that YEG isn't in as good a position to capitalize on potential feed so any potential for new flights is almost certainly going to rely entirely on good origin and destination numbers or the commitment from an airline to develop a strong enough network out of the city to feed a marginal route.

There was a pair of F-16's at EIA this morning as I was hopping a plane to Kelowna.

Kinda neat... got a picture of them taking off, will post when I get home.

I came in from Denver last night and saw a cargo jet at the airport. It was from Ukraine I believe. The plane was called Antanov I believe. I was shocked by how big the plane actually was being that close to it.

That's my story.

^I've seen that plane a few times @YEG. Pretty cool - especially for plane spotters.

Looking forward to it. Perhaps hotel renderings will be released that day as well.
