Whhooo, I'm not skipping over your question utenation, but let's have ark or Viper or someone else answer that one. I did have a thought along the line of rebuilding some of the great buildings that have met the wrecking ball over the years. Urbanboy, what if the new farmers market were built in the identical style of the original Salt Palace Pavilion with an accompanying square. In Italy, many of the farmers markets are of that incredible pavilion style, with an adj. open-air square. Hmmm... let's see if I can dig up a pic of one of my favorites in Padova.

No offense, but no one is going to change my opinion on the subject.. I think Cottonwood and Boiseguy are garbage.

You can take it or leave it.

If you guys want to keep bringing this junk up, let's do it. Otherwise, let's get back to the development..

I wasn't sure whether to put this here or in the transit thread, but this one is in desperate need of something to replace the current bickering, so here goes:

don't be a twit...

my comparisons and contributions are completely valid and I think informative.. both cities are growing, and changing. In a lot of respects in opposites.. Where as Salt Lake has the Urban presence, and infrastructure, light rail, historical presence, and is now working on creating vibrancy in its downtown... where as boise has vibrancy but is now itching for the infrastructure to support it... I would like to see downtown salt lake section off parts of downtown more into districts so that when more residents live downtown.. they will still have a sense of community within that downtown district.... That is how you make living in an urban environment appealing to people who are use to suburban living... there were studies done here in boise about living downtown.. and a majority of people actually wanted to get rid of their cars, and live near culture and venues etc, but they feared losing their sense of community by living in a city...

Boise Guy...

Now that was an excellent post! If I appeared to be a dick, I am sorry. Not because of your excellent post because I can be a dick. I do not want to be one one here!

Sorry!

Thanks for posting, Ark, that is impressive that SLC is ranked that well in commuting. Considering I've lived in three of the worst cities for commuters in the past, it is a joy to see this.

Thanks Ark for the post. I like reading those top tens, especially something like this dealing with transportation. It was very cool that SLC was as high already as #2. Imagine where we could be in the next 5 years, as so many of these projects just getting underway are completed. I like that pic also. Wow, they even included the new Zions reclad. Though, I do see the old Key Bank peeking out from behind there. From that angle will be beautiful when they finish CCC.

You know, when the Olympics were here I was a bit of a hermit, preferring not to deal with the crowds. Yeah, I regret that now.

Nice commuter article. I used to spend 1.5 hours a day in traffic commuting to my old job. That's changed to 10 minutes a day. The 27 hours mentioned in the article isn't bad, but is still 27 hours lost.

That #2 ranking doesn't surprise me at all. For a city its size Salt Lake has an excellent highway and road system, add to that the extensive light rail and commuter rail being put in place and SLC is one helluva an easy place to get around. Even when traffic did get bad/congested it cleared up pretty quick. SLC is a hidden gem

Wow, 27 hours a year is such a small number. That's only about six minutes for every weekday. It's one of the reasons I love Salt Lake City.

I was working pretty much every moment of the games, so I feel like I missed out as well. I did catch the closing ceremony fireworks--frackin' awesome!!

I think one of the worst outcomes of the Olympics was the lack of any dedicated landmark left downtown, like the Olympic Plaza in Atlanta. We missed the boat by holding the awards ceremonies in a parking lot. We should have built a plaza over that entire block, which we could still be using today as a public good and a permanent legacy of the games.

Forbes: Salt Lake City and America's 9 other most recession proof cities, In Depth

Jason Mathis/ SLC Convention & Visitors Bureau

#6 Salt Lake City, Utah

6. Salt Lake City, Utah
Median home price: +2.5%

Unemployment: 3.1% (from 2.6%)

Key growth: Education and health services, +5.5%

Though Salt Lake City's unemployment rate is rising, it's still among the lowest of the country's 50 largest cities (Washington, D.C., is second, but declining home prices kept it off our list). The state is still creating jobs, just not as quickly as its labor force is growing. A November 2007 report from the U.S. Conference of Mayors projected that Salt Lake City would be one of the few large cities in the country not to suffer a decline in gross metropolitan product from the mortgage crisis.

We do have some of the world's most incredible olympic realated facilities now as a part of the legacy. There are also monuments and fountains scattered throughout the downtown to U.of U.to Park City area. But I agree jmonkey, and would like to see something a little more 'old-world grande' in scale. It would be great, and I think it will eventually happen, especially "WHEN" we host the 2nd Oympics a few years down the road I would like to see a Grande Square, similar to those we see in Italy or France, or perhaps something to do with our future NFL/MLB stadium.

I just spoke with a the woman at the Planning Department who's handling this project, and here's what I learned:

There will be a presentation to the Planning Commission next Tuesday, I believe, at which Howa will request an extension of time in which to secure their financing for the project. Also, they're going to reduce the size of the residential component, and seek to do the project in a couple phases, starting with the west side of 300 West. That first phase will be exclusively commercial. They hope to use the first phase to "build momentum" for the second phase.

Everyone who put a deposit on the condos and townhomes that were to be built has had their deposit money returned to them.

Basically, this project is going nowhere fast. If we're lucky, we'll have a small amount of new commercial on the west side of 300 West. Perhaps this should be put up for other developers to bid on if Howa can't get it done.

Howa overpromised.
