Mayor Stephen Mandel leaves today on an eight-day trip to Central and Eastern Europe he hopes will make it easier to attract workers for the local economy.
“It’s to solidify some ties in Europe with Edmonton, so we not only have opportunities for trade, but also recruiting labour,” he said.
“The mayor brings a certain … amount of cachet to the program, so people start to think of Edmonton as really a strong opportunity for them.”
Mandel is starting in the Czech Republic cities of Prague and Liberec, where he’ll tour a nanotechnology research centre, before heading to Wroclaw and Warsaw in Poland and the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv.
He wants to raise Edmonton’s profile in hopes that skilled workers such as nurses, engineers and tradespeople will consider moving to the city.
“It’s not like we’re not short of everyone here … our main thrust is to get the name Edmonton out in these areas so when our recruiters go out there they will know what Edmonton is.”
The trip, which will cost about $10,000, is Mandel’s first mission to the region as mayor. He has gone to London, the United States and China, to which he’s thinking of returning in June.
In Warsaw, he’ll join people from Edmonton Airports when they meet staff from LOT Polish Airlines to discuss resuming direct flights between Warsaw and Edmonton, airport spokeswoman Traci Bednard said.
This link was dropped due to the financial challenges that affected the airline industry following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, she said.
“It would connect us to that region and there was good interest in it in the past.”
The airport authority and the Edmonton Economic Development Corp., which is taking part in the tour along with businesses and other organizations, are also stopping in London to promote the city and Air Canada’s London-Edmonton service, Bednard said.
Mandel, who returns April 5, will meet in Kyiv with Canada’s ambassador to Ukraine and staff at the country’s foreign ministry to discuss plans to open a consulate in Edmonton.
Edmonton East MP Peter Goldring said in a news release last month the office will be ready by the end of the year and that Foreign Affairs Minister Maxime Bernier has instructed his staff to work on it with Ukrainian officials.
It would be Canada’s only Ukrainian consulate west of Toronto.
A spokesperson at the Ukrainian embassy in Ottawa couldn’t be reached for comment.
