^ No wonder the lines at the Tim Horton's in the baggage claims level can get ridiculously long! Not that I care for the swill they call coffee at Timmy Ho's - I usually would rather pick the Second Cup upstairs if I want some coffee.

Edmonton, Alberta — The Government of Canada is investing in the development of a strategic plan to help position Port Alberta as a major North American inland trade and transportation hub.

The Honourable Rona Ambrose, President of the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of Western Economic Diversification, announced federal funding of $1.5 million toward the plan today.

“This investment marks an important step toward building the foundation needed to make Port Alberta a reality and success,” said Minister Ambrose. “This investment will help develop a blueprint that will bring the Port Alberta concept to life and create an industry-led council to provide leadership for the initiative.”

EDMONTON - The federal government has anted up $1.5 million to help launch Edmonton's Port Alberta project.

Western Economic Diversification Minister Rona Ambrose said developing Edmonton as a major inland trade and transportation hub is one of her priorities, and the money will help fund an industry-led council to bring it to reality.

The goal of the initiative led by Edmonton Airports, Edmonton Economic Development Corp., and Edmonton Chamber of Commerce is to develop a major warehousing and air, road and rail distribution hub linking Asia and North America through the port of Prince Rupert.

Font:****Prince Rupert's new container port, which opened last September, is 58 hours closer to Shanghai than any other North American port.

Edmonton Airports CEO Reg Milley said Edmonton is perfectly positioned to take advantage of the "tsunami" of trade coming from China to North America.

The new funding is vital in the international airport becoming a key cargo processing centre capable of hosting multiple modes of transportation, he said.

It will be a designated trans-shipment zone so imported goods can move to export without traditional tariffs.

"Onsite warehouse and logistics facilities will serve North America's growing trade through NAFTA and with Asia and Europe," Milley said.

The inland port will also help move goods faster from Canada to Asia, and chamber president Martin Salloum said westbound rail containers already are 36-per-cent full when 90 per cent were expected to be going back empty at this point.

"Twenty years from now, residents of the capital region will see a more diverse, dynamic economy. In an ever-changing global environment, the communities that will survive over the long run are those can effectively work together towards a common goal."

^ good things come to those who wait.

The Hotel, that is years of lobbying and working with the hotelier. Add the interesting politics played by local motels and hotels who are worried about a drop in business, and 10 years goes by quick.

^The hotel is going to be sweet. The last time I saw the drawings I was really impressed. It had a curved facade facing the parkade if I recall correctly. All the rooms were fan-coils, not ptac which is nice too. The transition from the terminal to the hotel also looked like it was nice and open. These were just mechanical drawings that I saw, nothing to show any sort of detail on finishing materials or composite drawings, also this was about a year ago, so things might have changed design-wise since then.

The real statement is: Why should you expand? We want to expand instead!!!! We have delusions of grandeur to be the biggest hotel in Nisku!!!!

It is eerily similar to many debates in this town and others. Fear mongering to cover the real business plan. Some people jus tcall it business lobbying.

I've never been lucky enough to stay at an airport hotel. For me anyways, it would be interesting to see airliners landing outside my hotel window. But i've always wondered, is a there a specific sound barrier insulation used for airport hotels? I'm assuming there is since not everyone likes to be woken up by a jet engine. Has anyone out there had experiences staying in an airport hotel? Just curious.

On a seperate topic, i'm wondering how YEG will cope with the competition / high fuel prices / consolidation faced by US airlines. Everyday it seems the stories come out about US airlines cutting even more routes. I hope that because of Alberta's above average economy, we won't be affected too much. Has anyone out there flown on Northwest, United, Horizon, Delta, etc. where it seemed that the flight was fairly empty?
