FYI have flown from Mex City on both AeroMexico and Mexicana to Vallarta and Cancun etc. Mex City Airport terminal for domestic connections is OK (just OK) and there are lots of flights. If you look at web fares (super savers) on Mexicana you can often get great domestic fares booking ahead.

Yes...I have flown that cheap PV flight many times and if I could go I certainly would...I just usually stay at a local hotel in PV in the romantic zone...it is neat, clean but can be a bit loud...but the price is right $20 solo...$28 for two. If you take the $95 flight and add on the cheap hotel you can be in PV for a week for under $500 plus food and booze.

AeroMexico will start operating weekly nonstops from Edmonton to Cancun effective May 18/08 through to Sep 28/08.The flights operated on behalf of Sunwing vacations will operate using Boeing 737-700 series aircraft in a 124 seat configuration featuring 12 first class and 112 economy class seats.The flights will operate nonstop to Cancun and will return with one stop at YYC to deplane YYC bound passengers.

Both Mexican airlines at YEG is pretty cool...Mexicana and AeroMexico.

Word is (not my department) that all staff parking will be moved to a new site to the east of the current location as of April 1st (tenative).

^Yes the AeroMexico charters are great, this time offering Cancun as oppose to the inbound only charters from Mexico city we have had over the past several years.Those flights are obviously now discontinued as a result of the new Mexicana schedules.

But still nice to see AeroMexico around, which by the way also gives more comfort to Cancun for us as the carrier's 737-700's offer very spacious seating and the choice of first class aswell...

This morning's CHED Lead in story was about Port Alberta and involves 6 Chinese investers looking to set up a distribution area near the airport. The airport was also looking at getting duty free status. Cargo would be coming from Prince Rupert which according to the report is 1.5 hours faster than through Vancouver.

Port Alberta Gets Investor's Boost

A major economic development initiative, Port Alberta, has just recieved a big shot in the arm, according to the federal minister in charge.

Western Diversification Minister, Rona Ambrose, confirms to 630 ched news - Airport CEO, Reg Milley, has lured six investors from China.

Ambrose also says that Port Alberta is now one of four port proposals looking for tax free status from the federal government. She says even if that duty free status isn't granted, Port Alberta will go ahead.

Port Alberta will be a manufacturing hub that will create hundreds of jobs.

The key expansion principle for future facilities at Edmonton International is to accommodate airside growth with very little capacity change to groundside infrastructure. This is a departure from traditional design where additional aircraft gates are matched with increased curbside, counters, and queuing space. To meet immediate demand and to bridge growth until the next phase of terminal expansion is complete, specialized apron loading buses will enable interim loading of aircraft directly from the apron.

The existing terminal building has a total of 30 stands (bridges or ground loading positions) for aircraft loading. Forecasts indicate an additional four loading stands will be needed for a total of 34 stands by the end of 2009. In the medium-term (five years) continued growth will require an additional seven loading stands for a total of 41 stands by the end of 2012.

Phasing of construction of this expansion will be done in a manner that minimizes loss of gates while adding capacity as quickly as possible. Phasing will include appropriate “off-ramps” should significant changes occur in forecasted growth or economics. By the end of 2012, Edmonton International will be 100 percent common use.

Common-use systems will enable passengers to retrieve a boarding pass, self-tag bags and check them in at any location in the terminal. Common use dynamic signage, which enables messaging to be quickly modified, will provide efficient wayfinding.

Common use will permit airlines to operate from any podium, bag drop, bag retrieval and gate podiums, and enables the airport to work with airline partners to manage space allocation.

I wonder if they're still going to have the "centralized security check" in the central hall after this expansion is done. Depending on where you check your baggage it could be a long walk around if you're going all the way back to the hammer head. The "Central Hall" won't really be so central anymore.

So any idea why they ditched the original idea that swung around from the south side and headed east? Or what about expansion plans at the WestJet end? (They are renovating that area soon, no?)

my guess is because this is the easiest. The other plan required a significant amount of additional infrastructure such as roads and ramps and interchanges. The previous short term plan was a finger at the north end. This takes care of the short term and forcasted mid term demand
