I think somebody already said that they won't be installing the fins until after most of the work is done, probably to avoid denting the fins with any falling debris or anything like that...

^^^ Remember though, that's just something I remember hearing a while back, it could be complete BS. I am going to go with my binoculars and look closer sometime and see if there are any attachment points for fins exposed on the facade.

They're not prominent because they haven't been put up yet; I think those fins are probably some type of cap that goes over the curtainwall and since it isn't integral to the design it's typically put in place after the curtainwall proper is installed; essentially it's just a finish item...

It'll probably depend on the lighting. Today is the first time in a long time thay we've actually had a peak at the sun. Lets see how it'll look with the sun hitting the fins. I'm sure that'll make them seem more prominent.

In order for the fins to meet the expectations of the renders, they would have to hang 2-3ft off the side of the building to be able to show the depth when you are a significant distance from the building that was expected from the renderings.

Fast forward 65 years, and honte will literally strap himself to the curtain wall in order to stop someone from tearing it off.

But yeah, I agree. I think they held a design contest at Lane Tech to determine the final plans.

I didn't say "This building is 🞵🞵🞵🞵, tear it down." I voiced a concern about the curtainwall. That doesn't mean I think the whole building is worthless - you can find fault in any design. But do I think it's going to live up to its potential or the render? Doubtful.

This is a case, in my opinion, where the person who was detailing the curtainwall did not have a sufficient grasp on the scale of the project. The mock-up looked nice; we all got excited. Then when you see it on the whole building, it's underwhelming and not scaled well.

Either this, or the developer cut costs, or they changed their mind about the intentions of the design.

Would my ghost fight for this building in 65 years? No telling, but this building has already missed the mark on being a pioneering design or innovating in any particular way, except for maybe a few of the environmental aspects. But in 10, 20, 30 years, I do think it could be a major contributor to the neighborhood, could play a key role in the rebirth of the river, etc. It might become a well-loved part of Chicago on those merits alone.

I'm going to wait until we have more than just a few floors of partially broken up (by that little balcony thing and the change in size) facade installed before judging it. I don't think it makes sense for anyone to say "the facade looked good in the small scale on the mockup, but doesn't look as good on the building" when only like 2% of the building has been cladded.

^^^ River North doesn't look bad at all from that angle, the beige jungle seems much more colorful from a lower level.
