Im guessing China. In fact, Im going to say China Air.
The release said that there will be "themed" entertainment. I think that is a bit of a clue.
3 flights a week. There will be a supplementary announcement tied to Cargo with the same airline. (pure guess)

The suspense is KILLING me!

We may be looking at new flights to either FRA, DFW or IAH, with LH, AA or CO, respectively. LOT to WAW (Warsaw) could be a possibility if it has enough planes to go around. Aeromexico (AM) to MEX could also be a possibility, especially as it's recently started serving YYC, but I'm not sure how likely that is.

But CO can't exactly be considered a truly new airline to serve YEG. Same goes for AA. Both these US carriers have served YEG at one point or another in the past. And of course LOT has served YEG until recently, too. Any Asian carrier would be a new one for us, though.

Apart from any new flights by any Asian carriers, this leaves Lufthansa to FRA or MUC, using the A330-300 or A340. Both the A340-300 and the 330-300 sound large, but they're the smallest widebodies in LH's fleet after the A300-600 (LH's A300s do not have the range). Not to mention that LH's A330s and some 340s are configured with a total of 221 seats each or 8F/48J/165Y. But some of LH's A340 are also configured with up to 266 seats. This is slightly more than AC's 767-300s, which usually have around 211 seats total, or 25-30J/173-188Y. LTU/Air Berlin is also a possibility, if bilateral agreements allow for that, but even their A330-200s, the smallest long-range aircraft, tend to have over 325 seats total each. However, I could be very, very wrong about flights to the EU, especially if the theme at the WTC announcement is Chinese/Asian!

I also highly doubt the possibility of passenger flights to anywhere in Asia. If YYC doesn't have the market, then neither does YEG by a long shot. Cargo cannot be completely ruled out. Especially with a Chinese company wanting to set up shop in Port Alberta.

But who really knows? The Chinese New Year is tomorrow - the same day as that announcement we've been waiting for. Hainan Airlines or Air China, anyone?

Hey I'm all for you guys landing an awesome flight, but do you really think the average traveller is going to go up to YEG instead of the usual jump over to YVR right now to get to Asia? Thoughts? I also make this assumption based on the fact that the average person would view going up to YEG as 'out of the way', whereas YVR is 'on the way' to asia. Of course I know all about great circle routings and the such, but try explaining that to the majority of the travelling public.

If I am not mistaken they are also a star alliance member as well which would help with connections for them.

I just can't believe that BA and AC would change their schedules to accomodate eachother. They are in direct competition. Besides, AC is doing well on the YEG-LHR flight so why would they move over, let a competitior take over a profitable route (i believe) and start a new route to compete a brand new YYC-FRA route served by their Star Allianace partner LH. It just doesn't make sense.

The Chinese New Year is an interesting coincidence though. Who knows. YYC feeding a YEG Asia flight, maybe. I looked up the Star Alliance and there are surprisingly quite a few Asian carriers: Air China, ANA, Asiana, Shanghai, Singapore and Thai.

Yup, sad but true.

However if it is indeed an Asian flight I would connect up to YEG to take it if the price was right.
