I think any City with an airport as far out from the CBD or further has either a commuter train or LRT. Certainly in Europe anyway.

LRT to airport no. (no point in building luxuries at expenses of priorities)

Express bus to century park when it opens = very yes. When the airport is prepared to pay the 'last mile costs' to get to the airport, it will be built.

High speed rail will likely stop at YEG before LRT IMO.

My guess on costs to get from Century Park to the Airport...north of 2billion dollars.

Although the idea of an LRT going to YEG is nice, I would rank it behind expanding the LRT north to NAIT, west to WEM, or SE to Millwoods. Do we REALLY need a train that runs to our airport? Maybe having more Airport shuttle buses is a better alternative.

we need public transport...which means BUS then LRT.

LRT needs to go to WLRT and NLRT before YEG, which as it stands would be about right IMO.

NLRT - 2009-2011
WLRT - 2011-2014
SLRT phase 2 to YEG - 2014-2017

timing seems about right

I love the idea of LRT to YEG, but I agree that West is a higher priority.

But in terms of a Millwoods line I'm not so sure. A Millwoods line would cost twice as much money as an extension to YEG. (unless it branches off Century Park which I think is the wrong solution)

Having LRT to YEG would make a huge difference both physically and psychologically in terms of the airport being connected to (and a part of) the city.

Although that article is great news, I must say that it is a little short on details. Namely timelines, costs, and sources of funding (beyond the reference to possible federal funding). I guess we will know more after he presents at council.

But LRT will be at Century Park right away. From Century Park it's a quick, almost freeflow route to get a bus out to AHD/QEII/YEG. That would be a perfectly functional transit service for the airport.

And from Century Park you have LRT to the UofA, Downtown, and nLRT. And if there's demand ETS could run an express bus along AHD to provide access to WEM. That's all with one transfer, which isn't unreasonable.

LRT would be a nice psychological connection, but so would seeing ETS buses cruising QEII and waiting at YEG. And really, a lot of the psychological elements are just a challenge for some decent marketing (which...yeah, is probably asking to much

).

I don't travel so much, but I've always wondered how someone travelling with a bunch of suitcases can even ride the LRT?? Last time I checked, there wasn't too much luggage space in those LRT cars

Most regular business travelers only have one or two bags that they can easily cart around, and will easily fit in an LRT car, even during peak hours. Many daily LRT commuters cart around such bags, suitcases, and backpacks already.

Ottawa runs low-floor articulated buses no different from our own on their Airport route - buses with even less space for luggage; yet they seem manage very well whenever I hop on the bus and head downtown when I travel there.

I guess you're right about the average business traveller. But then again, you also haven't travelled yet with my mom who packs like 5 suitcases for a one week trip

Also, the LRT to YEG wouldn't be 100% for travellers. It is also a major employment centre and would handle commuters as well.

Business travellers....really?? I know that when I travel for business, my corporate expense card does a nice job of paying for parking at YEG.

I can see this method of transportation to YEG as a good idea for many people, but I surely wouldnt be targeting nor expecting too much use from business travellers. I dont know, maybe that's just me...

There will always be those cases, too, and maybe the LRT isn't for those people...but it may not stop them from trying. =P

In any case, I think most people will 1. learn to cope with some baggage on the trains, and 2. will learn to cope with taking their baggage on the trains to the airport.

Human beings are funny creatures in that we complain so much about change, yet are capable of adapting to it so well.

There are more cost-conscious business travelers out there. =) I know I see a lot of them on the SkyShuttle service. But it will most definitely be a great service for anyone traveling for pleasure, as well, preferably with a reasonable amount of luggage, though I think we can accommodate the occasional 5-suitcasers as well.
