I'd say more fact than wishing....it all hinges on one major decision for Port Alberta...

I think at this point, Im more excited to see the announcements for Port AB over new flights at YEG. The potential there is huge.

^Dont get me wrong, thats great news as well, but doubling the airport? Either EAA is covering their asses this time and making sure they dont run out of space in less than half the estimated time, or there is something bigger behind all this that we dont know about. Why would they double the airports size unless they were working on something that we the general public arent fully aware of?

It's just more foresight then when the last expansion took place. To be fair, this kind of exponential growth couldn't be planned for, but now we deal with the problems we have.

doubling the airport at worst gives us room until 2020, at best room until 2015. It is a win win either way, and the lenders know this.

So, I don't think that anyone is overlooking the billion dollar expansion, it is just maybe being taken for granted?

Port AB is huge, don't underestimate it. It will only help to solidify the need for this and future terminal expansions.

Also note that the YUL-FRA flight will be switching to the 77W as of April 1st, freeing up another A333 route. This metal has to be getting allocated elsewhere, perhaps YEG's time is coming soon?
The 777's are meant as replacement for the 340's and 330's, so they will be retired eventually. They maybe be open for new routes for awhile, but Air Canada is expanding it's fleet of new aircraft, but at the same time getting rid of the old ones. The 767's are as good as gone when we get the 787's

I have always read that the 340's will be sold off but the 330's are staying. The 330 is supposedly a very economical aircraft to run for AC. As for the 767's being retired, they will be but how soon i'm not sure. The 767's are currently being refurbished. Would it make sense for AC to refurbish the 767's and get rid off them a year or two later? I think the 767 is one of the best long-haul aircraft in the world. I don't what other aircraft can seat passengers comfortably in a 2-3-2 seat configuration and have the same range.

I'm with you on this, the 333's are staying since they are getting the project XM upgrades starting in January. Same thing with the upgraded 763's. Sure long term they will be replaced by the 787's as they come on line but I never read anywhere that the 777's(both variants) were being bought as the 333 replacement.

The A330's are staying and will be XM'd. All the 340's will be subleased to others between now and April or May 2008.

On another note: wonder how this would translate for Edmonton?
NEW YORK, Nov 14 (Reuters) - Delta Air Lines Inc (DAL.N: Quote, Profile, Research) and United Airlines parent UAL Corp (UAUA.O: Quote, Profile, Research) have been discussing a merger, the Associated Press reported on Wednesday, citing an unnamed official.

"They want to get something done before a new administration gets in and so they get the clock ticking on" federal regulatory approval, the official was quoted as saying.

Delta was not immediately available for comment.

Delta earlier said it was reviewing strategic options, including a merger. (Reporting by Chris Reiter; editing by John Wallace)

Forgive me for seeming pedantic.

1. From the 2005 ACE Annual Report, I find the following statement:

"The Corporation expects to remove from operations all 20 Airbus A330 and A340 aircraft as well as all 12 Boeing 767-200 aircraft
as the new committed Boeing 777 and 787 aircraft are delivered. The debt and other obligations associated with these aircraft are
approximately US$850 million at December 31, 2005."

Seeming as the commitment at the time was for 18 B777 and 14 B787 aircraft, this would seem to indicate that the original intent was to replace the A333 with B777 aircraft.

2. Notwithstanding the above, I generally agree with your presumption that the A333 aircraft will be around for some years, and that there will be considerable overlap between the arriving and departing fleets.

3. However, I cannot see a very great net expansion in the Air Canada fleet. They have consistently stated that their capacity will only expand 4% - 5% percent annually over the next number of years.

4. I am afraid I do not think Edmonton will be at the front of the line for new Air Canada aircraft. I am surprised they managed to pry loose an aircraft for the London service. I am in agreement with those posters who see Edmonton's European and Asian air service expansion largely in the hands of carriers other than Air Canada.

Good topic for discussion, though!

^^^
AC is replacing it's 340 lift with the 777- more economical and greater range. And this is happening rapidly. This replacement also provides AC with more long haul wide body aircraft - 17 777's, versus 12 A340's.

The next step is 787 delivery starting in 2010. These aircraft, for the most part, a 767 replacement, have tremendous range, far greater than the 767 or the A330 which translates into more point to point long haul opportunities.

As the 787's are delivered, the 330's and 767's will slowly be retired, or better sub-leased.

Your not being pedantic However 2005 verus 2007 can be, at times, light years. AC has since exercised some of their 787 options, increasing their order to 37 aircraft with another 23 still held as options.

No airline wants to commit to purchases until the last possible moment. And no manufacturer wants to produce without commitments. So it goes in many other business sectors as well

Yes, a good topic though!!!

Edmonton International poised to surpass six million passenger

11/14/07

Edmonton, Alta. – Edmonton International Airport – Canada’s fastest-growing major airport –recorded its 22nd consecutive month of double-digit passenger growth and has served nearly six million passengers in the past 12 months.

“With a 17.3 per cent passenger growth rate through the end of October, we are on track in 2007 to exceed the six-million passenger milestone for the first time in Edmonton International’s history,” says Reg Milley, Edmonton Airports President and CEO. “What’s remarkable is that it was only in 2006 that we broke through the five-million passenger mark for the first time.”

Heated growth demonstrates pent-up demand

Edmonton International is posting double-digit passenger volume percentage increases in all major market segments.

Domestic – 14.1 per cent (year-to-date)
U.S. – 18.5 per cent (year-to-date)
International – 105.7 per cent (year-to-date)

“These unprecedented growth numbers are important because they help us build the case with airlines that Edmonton and Northern and Western Canada deserve even more air service through Edmonton International, especially to international destinations such as Frankfurt or Amsterdam,” says Milley.

“They also demonstrate that our planned $1-billion expansion program will be required to accommodate this current demand and to ensure we continue to meet our expanding air service – the best air service in our region’s history.”

International is the fastest-growing segment of the airport’s surging traffic. International passenger traffic in summer 2007 was up by 223 per cent over summer 2006 with Air Canada’s London-Heathrow daily non-stop service, new charters to Mexico and strong charter traffic to Europe.

Flights to and from Europe increased to 22 per week from just four in 2006.

With the busy holiday and sun vacation season on the doorstep, passengers can ease their experience by arriving at the airport at least 15 minutes prior the their flight’s earliest check-in time to park, check-in and clear security. ^absolutely phenomenal YEG....consider that WINNIPEG and OTTAWA have only 3-3.8 million in PAX and we are on pace for nearly double!

But we should be closer to 7.5 IMO long term for we are being shorted on both routes and metal.

cant wait to see the 1billion expansion kickoff bigtime in 2008 with a hotel (FINALLY), new terminal, new parkade (u/c) and hopefully port alberta/airlinks.
