Hopefully, they will put back or maybe even add frontage/floors. I know the Capitol is having to add space in very creative ways in order to meet the high demand on its facitlity. The Capitol is also having to expand its lobby,but it would seem the Utah already has much larger common areas than the Capitol.

Also, another blurb about the opening of American Apparel. It would seem like marriad men are pretty familiar with the reputation of this store.

After seeing Vipers photos I would have to agree that the Utah should be saved. However I will say that that is going to be a VERY large bill to restore it and bring it up to code, especially siesmic code. Hopefully the legislature will get onboard because I don't see enough private money coming in to do the job. I definitely think this would help add nighlife to main street too.

Wow--the interior of the Utah is in much better shape than what I had imagined. After seeing the evidence for myself, I say it's worth the fight to keep it. I had no idea so much of it was still intact!

With the new Hamilton Tower and it's proposed street-level restaurant, The Monaco Hotel, etc. in the immediate vicinity, that could turn into one very vibrant stretch of thoroughfare.

As long as Hyatt promises to that it won't look anything like the Convention Center Hyatt in Columbus Ohio that I saw last Friday.

Preferrably one more like Hyatt Convention Center Hotel at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver. Wouldn't this make a nice addition to the Salt Lake City skyline.

Agreed. I wouldn't mind seeing both the Shilo Inn and that parking garage disappear. They are both prime spots for a new convention center hotel and performing arts center. Something along the lines of the Denver Hyatt would be great.

Guys, im not normally a pessimist, but we dont want the Hyatt like Denver. I was just in downtown Denver last month... its not very good looking. Bland coloring, small windows...nothing special.

Size-wise... yes, but the look, no!

Good to have an eye witness to it. I did see an actual photo of the Denver Hyatt after I posted the rendering and it didn't look all that great.

Yeah, Wasatch is right. I think there have been a few Denver Forumers bemoan the exterior look of it. We definately should be hearing something in the next year or two about a convention size hotel that is closer to the Salt Palace than the Little & Grand America. I'm surprised it hasn't been announced already.

Are you guys of the opinion then that the Shilo site could handle a larger convention hotel of say 1200 plus rooms? I'm just wondering if that site is big enough. Definately would like to see something done with the Shilo. I think it would be great if it became the site for a Condo tower, such as tower 1 of CCC., or even just a reclad and conversion to a boutique type hotel alla Monaco.

I stand well and truly corrected about the state of the Utah Theater. While some damage has occured over time, it is actually in pretty good repair. I'd love to see it reopened in some capacity, while also building a new, modern theater for broadway shows. I like some of the locations mentioned along West Temple, especially the parking lot to the south of the Peery Hotel; on 300 South as a site. I'm glad there's a concerted effort that's started to save the Utah Theater. My opinion on it just swung 180 degrees, just by seeing some interior pictures.

I've always hoped for a convention center hotel to replace the Shilo Inn. I utterly loathe that building. It is god-awful. Probably the ugliest building in the city right now, IMO, and not because it isn't maintained. To think it replaced a building that was designed by Louis Sullivan!! Granted, it wasn't the best building Sullivan ever did, but it was designed by the father of the American Skyscraper, and was definitely a great example of his style. It was certainly better looking than the F-ing Shilo Inn.

I think the site of the Shilo would be plenty of room for a 1000+ room hotel--It doesn't give anyone much room, except to build UP. And it it directly across the street from the Salt Palace.

Other sites that I think a convention hotel could be built include the corner of the street opposite the Shilo (the NE Corner of 200 S. and West Temple), the site of the ExpoMart (200 S and 200 W, though that does face the loading docks of the Salt Palace). Or the site surrounding the old Zions Bank building (the SW corner of 100 S. and Main). I don't think that such a hotel would go to the north, as all that property is owned by the church, which would be very hesitant to give any of it up, or allow alcohol to be served on it in hotel restaurants and clubs.

What a shame to have lost that building for the Shilo.

I agree wholeheartedly, the Shilo is easily one of the worst buildings in the city. If the convention center hotel were to use all of the area the Shilo occupies, then there would be enough room. It would probably be about the same size of footprint as what the Hilton.

Thank you for the reference of the original building designer. I for some reason was thinking it was a Frank Lloyd Wright commercial building, but this makes more sense.

I think they would need to connect underground to the Salt Palace, which would require some remodeling of the the convention center. The good convention centers and conv. center hotels that i've been to connect to the convention space. I think the underground method would be better because again we don't want a Sky Bridge and that would be a MAJOR sky bridge to get all the way across the street and into the Salt Palace. That is why I have always thought that the Radison needs to be larger, it would be much easier to connect.

Sometimes when I see old pictures of SLC I wonder if the city has actually regressed

...i.e. great architecture, and street cars preceeded the shilo and wide roads currently there. Then we get light rail again and hopefully, tear that shilo sucka out for something more long term... its kind of like kids moving sand in a sand box from one side to another!

...I like, however, Salt Lake's current development direction (crime on the otherhand seems to be getting out of control...)

I was going to mention how interesting it is that Chipolte opened up right there by Cafe Rio'. Having been out of Utah for over a year now I miss Cafe Rio and have only gone to Chipolte once on my own accord, the other couple of times is because somebody else insisted on going there. It really bugs me that they opened right by Rio. In my opinion Rio is hands down more flavorful and as a side note, Chipolte is owned by McDonalds(I correct myself here, full divestment from McDonalds happened in 2006). The food isn't bad it's more along the lines of Barbacoa, which again I would rather go to than Chipolte.

So I will support Cafe Rio by not going to Chipolte out here and all of you need to support Cafe Rio by going there instead of Chipolte.

The Chipotle here in Bountiful also opened up near Cafe Rio. The Cafe Rio here in Bountiful is their largest restaurant I heard and it is always packed for lunch and dinner.

Cafe Rio is always packed in American Fork too. Great food for the money spent! Servers are all super outgoing and friendly also.
