I really like the blue. I think it will add some much-needed color to the riverfront. Reminds me of 50 E Chestnut, which has similar stone/blue glass and looks fab.

oh yeah, they cut the rear columns out of the plans to be more cost-effective. no-one's going to see those ones anyway, right?

either that, or they haven't gotten to that side yet... we shall see

or maybe I'll let solarwind answer the question you asked solarwind

The setbacks are all on the SE courner, making the building heaviest on the NW.
Along the N side are the BIG collums, the Core incorporates 6 (?) collums, visable in other shots as rectangular holes.

there are columns back there, you just cant see them. And they arent as big as the front columns because the towers setback at the 29th floor nearly cuts the floorplate in half (diagonally).

Guys, these are hard too come by you know?

^ Now, that's the ticket. Thank you BVictor No. 1.

I think it looks pretty darn nice now that I can see the full assembly. Much applauded is the texture in the facade by mounting some glass flush and some recessed; also in the two different spandrels. Cool. The operable window looks a bit off, but oh well.

I'm still a little selfishly grumpy after learning that Shangri-La hired Norman Foster to do their NY building, so this is a nice thing to see.

Nice to see this one coming along. I last saw it in person late April when it was still below street level. If those are indeed the windows to go on the façade of the building, then I think its safe to say this will be a nice looking building. Better than Trump it seems.

cool, Po Mo as you dont see much of anymore in Chicago. I didnt realize it was going to be quite this gray in color but I definately like it. As I've seen Trump going up I've become more pleased with it. I dont think this blows it away but offers the perfect contrast to something so glassy and bright. The massing on this tower is my favorite part. It is done so tastefully. I love modern, but definately like to see design in other styles as well. The details are definately more muted. In this day of shiny metal and glass, this building isnt relying Hollywood effects to attract the attention. Waterview gets your attention by using the original tools of early highrise designers; height, massing and all important stone, even if a veneer. We dont have to forget the romantic period of skyscrapers to move into the future.

That was my thought as well. It's a nice effect. From what we see, I like the fact that the surface of the building, with the recessed window frames and the granite, will be more than just a smooth reflective surface.

LOVE IT!

I love the use of different sizes of glass panes. The fact that some are recessed, and the stonework. The facade of this building is going to be a stunner.

Well, the stone was always a veneer, at least back to the 1920s. There's no point to using stone slabs thicker than a few inches when the building is a steel frame construction - it's not the stone that provides the structural support and thicker stone blocks would only add weight.

But I generally agree. I like this better now with the latest pic. What I'm really hoping for is that this somehow allows it to appear close to the nighttime render below, which is by far my favorite of this building:

But the above looks like glass and steel to me. I am in support of less glass, so it's not another big shiny blue mirror. But steel would look sleek. At the least, the window frame steel should be stainless rather than the cheap looking battleship grey in those pics.

Yeah you are correct about veneer being around a while, i had several ideas going in my head without precisely stating the details of older masonry and stone skyscrapers. They liked to use more serious cuts of stone that left few people knowing otherwise that it might not be what it appeared. Now days its generally made more obvious that veneer is veneer like these flat squares of stone. I was nervous first seeing the grey, I got used to it with the image that shows more context. I can at least live with it, well hopefully. The first few images had me more worried. Im sure you are right that it could look very cool with the right reflective metal ornamentation. Im just glad to see not every designer or developer try to do the same thing. It would get too predictable otherwise.
