Big projects currently out for tender ... Intervac at the U of S & the Shaw Centre (the civic centre on the west side). We might then get a good opinion of how construction costs are in the city.

i watched a show on the railway...this makes me hate regina even more! i wonder what saskatoon would look like if the railroad had come through saskatoon. i suppose battleford would be the big city.

No reason to hate Regina for it lol, If I recall correctly, it was the government's decision in an effort to create more density in the south, to prevent the Americans from invading the prairies.

And if anything, the railways currently favour Saskatoon, since VIA discontinued service to Regina and Calgary

I doubt it would have made much of a difference in Saskatoon. Regina likely would have been founded somewhere in the Qu'appelle valley tho (if it would have been founded at all without the rail), and Moose Jaw wouldn't exist, since it's the province's main Railway hub

if I recall correctly, i believe they chose the south becuase land was cheaper there. I doubt regina would be what it is today, or even exist as you said ( by the way i actually don't have anything agenst Regina) because Battleford was already the capital of the Northwest Territories. and Saskatoon would most likely be the second largest city...so actually i guess we would have ended off worse than we are. oh well, what happened in the past cannot be changed. we must look to the future! Saskatchewan as a whole has a lot top offer Canada and the world

Council approves funds for substation projects

City council on Monday night approved an extra $3.4 million in spending this year for the civic electrical utility, Saskatoon Light and Power.

The money will be dedicated toward three capital projects: Substation conversion to replace the downtown station located inside the River Landing development, replacement of switch gear and associated hardware at the J.M. Taylor substation and upgrading of switchgear at the College Park substation.

The downtown conversion would normally take about three years to complete, but the city wants to have it done in half that time -- resulting in overtime pay for work crews, on top of escalating material costs and weather delays, according to a report received by council.

Font: ****Further review of the equipment at the J.M. Taylor substation has led administrators to conclude the station's switchgear should be completely replaced rather than refurbished, the report adds.

The College Park substation is not slated for its upgrade until next year, but the city can save on the cost by ordering the new equipment at the same time as the J.M. Taylor equipment, utilities manager Murray Totland explained.

The additional money will be taken from Saskatoon Light and Power's extension and replacement reserves.

If I recall, VIA service was discontinued because the south mainline line was too congested with freight traffic and the federal government couldn't be bothered to make the appropriate expansions which would allow for efficient interurban service to operate alongside freight. Since freight traffic is clearly more economically significant in Canada, I would say that the railways definitely favour Calgary and Regina over Edmonton and Saskatoon.

nice pictures! the wooden covered structure on the river landing, is it an obdervation tower? does anyone have the final plans for it? as well as photo number 4. is it that building that just a few weeks ago a wooden shell of an old building?

yea i accually think it is its called the pavilon take a look on the diagram of the river landing

Pavilion that will include an observation tower, concessions, washrooms and more

I have no idea how tall it will be but probally not too tall because i heard that there a restriction of 4 stories. It could also be 8 hopefully but i doubt it. fortunatly it looks big enough for a elevator!!

as far as i know of there is no diagrams but i bet there will be a rendering at the end of the month is it is anything
but for now we can only wait

It says there is a 8 story (27 meter height restriction) So that is very good. It won't be as nice as calgarys tower but at least its a start

i think the tower in calgary is ugly, 8 storeys would be nice, but only if it is relatively pleasing to look at.

saskatoon is constructing an observation building up to 8 stories on the river landing there is no renderings or blueprints shown to the public yet but it has started being bult. picture number 30
