The latest River Landing project is a three-inone package deal, acting as a water-play area, an art exhibit and an interpretative feature of the Saskatchewan river basin, stretching from the Rockies to the Canadian shield.
The Water Play feature, which is estimated to cost half a million dollars, will stretch more than 40 metres long and 20 metres wide.
A river will run through it, and alongside the river will be fountains, mist and fog exhibits that children can turn on themselves.
Susan Lamb, chief executive officer at Meewasin, said the play area was designed with a view to get children interested in coming to River Landing.
"This will be something that families and people of all ages will enjoy," she said. The project is meant to be seen and enjoyed rather than full of information to read and absorb, said Lamb.
The area is a representation of the Saskatchewan river basin, which includes the North Saskatchewan, Red Deer, Oldman, Bow, Highwood, South Saskatchewan, Battle, Saskatchewan, St. Mary and Carrot Rivers. The feature will cover 10,000 years of the history and development of the basin.
"It's the story of the development of the prairies," said Lamb. Signs and symbols will be used to represent the aboriginals' way of life, the trading posts that sprang up in Canada's wilderness, and the major communities that established themselves there, such as Saskatoon. "Aboriginal peoples went up and down that river basin and when Europeans came, they settled all up and down the basin," Lamb said. "That's how trade happened. People would go along the river systems." The feature will be girded by boulders representing the Rocky mountains and a wetlands area into which the river will drain. The three Prairie provinces will be represented with their provincial flowers and trees or with images and textures embedded in the concrete, such as aerial photographs of crops. Lamb expects construction on the project to start this year, with the feature opening to the public next summer.
