Public Safety

Highest crime reduction in Western Canada in 2005 (second highest nationally)

- During an national and international decline in crime. This a trend that has been happening for decades. The extra cops may have taken it down a few notches.

Anti bullying public fight bylaw and Anti-graffiti bylaws implemented

- These are all fluff and no substance and really don't deal with the issue.

Auto thefts in Regina reduced by 44% over last three years

- Violent crimes and crimes against people up

Streets, Roads & Infrastructure

More kilometers of road have been fixed in Regina over the last six years than ever before

-More kms have been built as a percentage of roads, it is less.

The Big Dig - Urban Revitalization of Wascana Park

- Province and feds but Fiacco's boasting could confuse you.

Multi-million dollar re-development plan currently underway for Ipsco Place (Regina Exhibition Park)

-see above

Re-development and expansion of Regina International Airport

-see above above

Major re-development of Highway 1 & Victoria Avenue East

- Due to lack of proper planning, this was mess created in the first place by approving every plan. Yet, it is still not meeting demands.

Social & Cultural Sustainability

Development of the Regina Inner City Community Partnership, the Housing Standards Enforcement Team, Regina Inner City Family Foundation and the Inner City Housing Stimulation Strategy to help stimulate growth and development in our inner city

- and underfunded, extremely underfunded. What's the point of creating something and not giving it teeth or funds. So, you can say you did ?

Discount Bus Pass Program

-Province

Mayors Luncheon for Business and the Arts

- Yes, a luncheon

Regina designated Cultural Capital of Canada

-In 2004 and hasn't come close since, as the cuts have destroyed that facet of the city.

Economic Development

Among the lowest average municipal property tax increases in Western Canada

- Highest water and sewer rates and user fees for public facilities in western Canada. One of the worst records for out dated infrastructure. It comes at a cost but have there been benefits ?

Regina led the nation in economic growth in 2004 and was fifth in 2005

-Yet taxes are still increasing faster then under Archer's 12 years during a recession. Also in infrastructure, libraries. It isn't being used properly. And 2006 will be lower and 2007 will be lower, read Conference Board of Canad's predictions. The false growth is coming back to bite us in the 🞵🞵🞵.

Created a positive environment for Economic development

- how ?

Formed the Regina Region with 33 surrounding municipalities

- Legislation driven

Mayors' Taskforce on Regina's Future

-Has done ?

Chair, Big City Mayors Caucus

-This is a program for residents in what way ?

New downtown developments include: The Renaissance, Century Plaza, New STC depot, and new hotel development

- How is this because of Fiacco ? Was he an investor, did he broker a deal ?

Demolition of derelict properties

-Straight off his brochure, that should heritage properties.

Environmental Sustainability

Working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions with programs like Carpool.ca, the Commuter Challenge, the Anti-Idling Campaign and the One Tonne Challenge

- No concrete policies but lots of flowery feel good stuff. How about some real efforts like lower transit fees.

Making City Hall Citizen Friendly

- That is the impression, I get watching them at council meetings. This is a lame one.

Initiated the Core Services Review and created the Open Door Fridays, Mayor’s Speakout Line, Mayor For a Day program and I Love Regina campaign

-Yes the core services review that reduced spending a frivolous programs like community association grants, arts and festival funding and community policing. Stand by that one.

Isn't it funny how you think it makes sense to criticise the mayor for any bad project in the city, but he shouldn't deserve any credit for good projects?

Also there are a lot of government offices, but they're not all government. I know there's some kind of law firm in that building for sure.

I do agree that its silly that some of the government buildings sell the naming rights to smaller tenants, but what do you expect, it's the capital city in a NDP ruled province, and it wouldnt make sense for all those skyscrapers to say "saskatchewan" on the top

And as far as I know, the Delta barely has any offices in it. The building is mostly hotel-use isn't it?. The only government office in the building that I know of is northern affairs. But I could be wrong

Keep in mind I haven't been to that building (Delta Hotel) in a few years, but it used to house a few federal offices. One being Economic Development.

It is actually about half offices and half hotel. If you look at it closely from the outside you can see there is a difference in the floors. The office portion was primarily government offices of various departments. This may have changed though... you might want to walk through the lobby next time you are in the area and look at the tenant directory and let me know.

Will everyone please quit bickering?
He approves the bad projects and therefore has a measure of responsibility in it.

The good one's. that the City initiated and paid for will get my approval but none the one's mentioned were. I believe the Leader Building project is a city initiative and he should get his kudos for that Wascana Lake was the province and Ralph Goodale. Fiacco rode coat tails.

It isn't bickering, it is an attempt at reasoned debate with the unreasonable.

Not true. Crimes against the person dropped 2.7% from 2005-2006, and are over 5% lower than the 2001 numbers. In fact, the only category that increased last year was "Traffic Code Violations". Funny what happens when you use real statistics isn't it?

Obviously more roads have been built, but actually, the increase in km of fixed-roads is much much higher than the kms of new roads

The feds and the province didn't pay the whole bill, it was a partnership between all three levels. The city contributed $4 million (22% of the total project cost).

hardly Fiacco's fault. Regina's high water rates come from the need to pipe our drinking water all the way from Buffalo Pound lake. And those high sewer rates are funding a state of the art waste treatment plant that converts your efluent into ecologically safe water which is released back into wascana creek, downstream from the city. Would you rather Regina be like Victoria and dump our raw sewage into the lake to save a buck?

Like I said before, if you won't give credit to Fiacco for good projects in the city, it isn't fair for you to continue to trash-talk him for the bad ones.

If you can find something, he initiated and funded then please post it because I can not.

Crime: Murder up, Kidnapping up, Robberies up Downtrend national trend , everywhere.

Water bills: The high cost is due to a stupid policy of transferring 7.5% to general revenue, not the water nobody drinks.

Infrastructure: At one of the lowest % of expenditures, ever.

I mean even " I love Regina" was initiated by Archer and put on hold until after the election, Fiacco won and claimed it has his own.

Please show me something concrete and real that the Mayor has done, please.

Jim Holmes,

You are making yourself look worse every day on this site. It's time to cut your losses and go back to the drawing board on a new strategy. Publicly bashing Fiacco is not working.

You wish, I was Jim Holmes but I'm not.

It isn't bashing when it is accurate and true. Get your head out of your 🞵🞵🞵, breathe some fresh air, read a book and you will see the reality.

You and many others have bought into his cult of personality but I guess if Pat Fiacco says so, it must be true.

Just curious...what are the average prop taxes in Regina? And in what way did it lead the nation in economic growth in 2004 (what was this measured by)?

And how was a "positive environment" created?

Not trying to stir things up - I like these lists, but find they typically lack information (not just Regina...every city/prov/country does this)

The avearge property tax, city portion, is around $1,300 per annum. The avaerage increase has been just under 2%. However, the current mayor and council campaigned on zero increases and labelled the previous Mayor as a tax and spend mayor. However, the property tax rate has increased more since he was replaced with a booming economy then he did in 12 years during a recession. The current council has held taxes to zeros 3 times in 6 years but the years, it went up were around 4% or more.

The economic growth was reported via stats canada and is very accurate. Regina did make large gains at the beginning of the decade, due to a concerted effort to push residential development. This has become unsustainable and the economy has been slowing down ever since. The Conference Board of Canada is expecting growth to slow to 1.9% for 2007, due to an over supplied real estate market.

The postive enviroment seems to be a myriad of booster campaigns to ensure that everyone knows how great their life is in Regina. That and the total bansihment and attacks on anyone that reports or publicly states that there might be some issues that are not addressed or need addressing (see Maclean's).

remember when someone made a template of empty downtown railyards, then everyone got to flex their creative muscle and come up with ideas for the vacant space?... that was fun... too bad

Regina's debate over Mayor Fiacco's performance is quite passionate for either perspective. I'm curious to know how the media portray him, and how the public perceives him.

The discussion seems to focus on one person without mentioning the supporting systems of municipal government which act collectively to form ideas and reach consensus. To suggest the Mayor is responsible for all, or almost all initiatives or policies(good or bad) is an ignorant opinion which lacks criticism of councilors and civic departments who have just as much responsibility in the development and servicing of a city.

Maybe I've missed it through the pages of discussion, but all I hear is what Fiacco has or hasn't done, no talk of councilors or department heads. Surely there is more complexity to Regina's municipal operations?

I attempt to speak about Fiacco and council or mayor and council or city council but the truth is that Regina's Mayor controls council's agenda and those that disagree are brushed aside or dealt with quickly but effectively. Watch a council meeting or attend one.

As for the mandarins at city hall, they can recommend a course of action but in the end it is council choice. There are many examples of council overriding the administrations recommendations, the skate park fiasco comes to mind.

Mayor and council have been given a free ride by the local media, even when questionable policy is enacted, it rarely questioned. In fact many editorials come to his rescue when he screws up. Some examples are conflict of interest in land development, city employee working on campaign during work time and on payroll, Maclean's and North Central, copy the Premier's speech to volunteers and lying about tax increases or the lack of any.

Hope that answers you questions.
