I think this has more to do with the job creation and economic activity that a terminal would bring with it. It seems that it's only been in the last 10 years or so that the benefits of containerized shipping of goods has even been realized.

It was different, but moving the railyards was on the books and never done. If it had been done, to the North of the city I believe, the terminal idea would probably be a lot quicker and simpler to implement. As it stands now there's a couple rather large hurdles, although getting the yards right by the airport would make it pretty sweet. If they expanded the airports runway capacity to handle larger cargo planes within the next decade. I'm not trying to piss in Regina's cornflakes, I just want them to do something for once.

With Doris Day in office, Alberta has a distinct advantage towards funding unfortunately.

The police stuff is great news. I had heard of that being on the books prior to the last election and it's nice to see it hasn't been lost. Having the RCMP and police training stuff would be a great tandem.

The projects was well into development until the Conservatives were elected and put the idea on hold. From what I heard They were already accepting applications for employment. It was said that Harper wanted to re-locate the project to Alberta somewhere.

Given the city's ties to law and policing, it would only make sense to have the centre in Regina.

Agreed with the website. There really isn't anything like it out there for Saskatchewan. Other provinces and cities have websites and forums dedicated to their cities/provinces, but I haven't see anything like it for Saskatchewan. I am envisioning a website where people can come to talk about the city/province but also a spot for those travelling through the city/province who are in need of advice. I think people have a very poor view of what Saskatchewan is. I think something like this would be a good way for us to promote our city/province.

Maybe we can set up a partnership with Riderfans, eh Chaps?

I guess I'm getting ahead of myself, but it's certainly something to think about.

Actually I had been thinking about doing a site like that ever since I found this site. That's why I was so interested when someone else mentioned it.

I'm extremely busy right now...but maybe this summer when I am not at school and the baby gets a little older, it can be something I'll look into. Once it is set up, it wouldn't take too much more work. And I could host it on the same server as RiderFans.com to cut the costs.

Well I already have the graphics and layout done for a Regina/Saskatchewan promotion website, I posted a picture of it earlier in this thread, and I've designed forums in PHP before, so we could possibly work on that project together

Okay so my mother is dating a guy who works for the RCMP. I was chatting with him for a bit about the RCMP museum project and stuff and got talking about other things as well.

He said the feds are wanting the RCMP Depot to train 70ish troops per year now, up from the current 30 some they do.

So of course, I had to ask how that's possible and if they are building more facilities. He said right now they are going to or are currently constructing (can't remember which) a new Mess Hall, new Range, and some other things.

Anyone have any more info as to what is happening at the depot? Or even some renderings or ideas of what's being built?

Or how about pictures in general. I don't really know much about the depot...driven by numerous times...but never went on a tour so I don't know how many buildings or how it's laid out.

Oh and also apparently the museum will be charging a fee now...they had no planned on charging at the door before.

I don't have the exact specifics, but if you recall back to the summer, Harper was in Regina to announce more funding for the RCMP. If I'm correct, I believe that part of the funding was to go to new residences.

Not sure about what else they have planned.

If you ever get the chance to visit the area where the houses and chapel are, do it. It's like an idyllic little town. Little old brick houses a nice church, big old trees...if you can get there at Christmas, even better. With the snow and lights and everything, it's like perfection. It feels so safe like nothing bad could ever happen there. (The armed guard at the gates doesn't hurt!)

I was at the casino the other night, and we had to park higher up in the casino parkade. I found out that there is a pretty cool view of downtown from up there.

I snapped a pic with my cellphone...but the quality is terrible and you can't see the twins or SGI because of the darkness and quality of the shot. But with the human eye, it was a pretty cool view!

Yup, and he thanked me and mentioned that he is really enjoying the discussion. I kinda got the drift from him that he already knew about the thread but its kinda hard to tell for sure through type. Either way its great to know he is checking it out.

Tourism office wants to move downtown

A request for a 55 per cent increase in the grant the city provides to Tourism Regina was submitted to city councillors Tuesday.

Steve McLellan, the executive director of Tourism Regina, told the finance and administration committee at city hall that the requested $150,000 grant increase (to $418,500 from $268,500) is needed for several reasons, including moving the Tourism Regina offices to a new location in downtown Regina.

The existing office space, on Trans-Canada Highway, just east of the city boundary, has outlived it usefulness, McLellan said.

"We think the place for us is our vibrant downtown,'' McLellan told the committee.

A downtown location would help Tourism Regina serve people attending conventions, as well as other tourists sampling the downtown attractions, McLellan said.

A tourist information centre would continue to operate at the existing Trans-Canada Highway location but only during the peak summer holiday highway traffic period, McLellan said.

Members of the finance committee commented favourably on the proposal submitted by McLellan but stopped short of immediately approving the budget increase. They instead referred the matter to be considered by city council as part of the 2007 budget discussions.

"I certainly like what I see in terms of the overall approach,'' Coun. Michael Fougere said.

But the request for more money needs to be assessed in a larger context, in terms of the city's overall financial situation, Fougere said.

There are a number of uncertainties related to the 2007 civic budget, including issues about the amount of revenue-sharing money will be provided by the provincial government.

In addition to moving downtown, McLellan said Tourism Regina wants more money from the city to hire a full-time Internet and media co-ordinator

"The role of the Internet, particularly in the area of tourism, has gone crazy,'' McLellan said, adding that Tourism Regina wants to expand its efforts in that area.

The Internet and media co-ordinator would also work with the local media in Regina to help inform Regina residents about all the events and attractions that exist in the city, McLellan said.

That could pay benefits in terms of getting Regina residents to spend more time and money on local events, McLellan said. For example, McLellan said a local resident might decide not to go visit relatives in Vancouver but instead invite the Vancouver relatives to come to Regina and sample the attractions

McLellan said part of the extra money requested would also be used to further develop a tourism strategy for the city.

The money the City of Regina contributes to Tourism Regina pays rich dividends in leveraging other money and in promoting economic activity in the city, McLellan said.

Only 20.5 per cent of Tourism Regina's $1.3 million budget last year came from the city's grant, McLellan said.
