You make it seem like that was some sort of sacrifice!

Is your job permanent or just a term?

As for the website, I think it's a great idea. It will be a place for people from our city to talk (via messageboard) and others to come to learn about the city. This site and riderfans are the only two places to talk Regina talk on the internet it seems. It will be a valueable addition, I believe.

Great to hear your moving back Reginaguy. That 3D model looks awesome.....would also be fun to play around with the finished product and put a brand new 30 storey glass tower on the corner of Albert St and Vic Ave.

That said, I heard a rumour today that the SGI tower is getting the exterior reno'd. Anyone else hear this???

Yeah, someone had mentioned that sometime ago...I think it was Sask1982?

Haven't seen any renderings thus far.

Haha, it's all good when the city has the SK abbreviation behind it. With that being said I enjoy both Saskatoon and Regina, they both have their unique upsides.

As far as the job, it's permanent. It's an Analyst (funky title they gave me for a computer programmer) position at CGI downtown.

I consider the SkyscraperPage.com forum a gem for news on development in the city, would be nice to get more people involved (more news!) and I'm sure a more local based website would fulfill that.

Anyone else sick of this weather?

The building CGI is in looks like it's pretty nice.

Agreed with the website. There really isn't anything like it out there for Saskatchewan. Other provinces and cities have websites and forums dedicated to their cities/provinces, but I haven't see anything like it for Saskatchewan. I am envisioning a website where people can come to talk about the city/province but also a spot for those travelling through the city/province who are in need of advice. I think people have a very poor view of what Saskatchewan is. I think something like this would be a good way for us to promote our city/province.

Maybe we can set up a partnership with Riderfans, eh Chaps?

I guess I'm getting ahead of myself, but it's certainly something to think about.

So, is that 3D map of Downtown what it looks like in 10 or 20 years with only 3 building left standing?

No nightclubs, no theaters, the place empties, like rats from a fleeing ship, as soon as 5pm rolls around, a growing collection of boarded up buildings and no grocery store (Shopers doesn't count). If you don't work downtown, you don't go downtown. Whatever minute positive changes have been made are overshadowed by the steady decline of the area.

Your quick reply tells me that my input isn't appreciated here.

Your input is more than welcome. No one said everyone has to agree on everything. May I ask, do you live in this city?

I agree, save for a few places, the area really empties once the workday ends. No night clubs, but it does have the city's most popular bar. Hypothetically if the railyards are removed then the Dewdney strip is easily accessible from the downtown core. Problem solved.

As for the theatre, I've expressed my displeasure about it not being downtown several times. Judging by the lineup last weekend at the Galaxy, I would say Regina could use another one. Would be nice to see it downtown, somewhere in between Alberta and Broad.

I wouldn't say the area is declining. In fact I think it was at its lowest point around 2000. Recently I'd say things are actually looking up. You have new office development, new commercial, new resedential, etc. So it's not all doom and gloom as you seem to think it is.

If you truly read through this thread, you'd notice that a grocery store is in the process of being built. In the rest of the building, offices and resedential. That doesan't sound too bad to me?

I'm not sure what collection of boarded up buildings you are talking about? There are several vacant buildings, but there seems to have been a trend lately. I can think of three vacant units that are now occupied. Spytech, The Green Spot Cafe, and Microage Training Centre. Again, that looks like positive development to me.

On top of that, just a stones throw away from downtown is the proposed Diocese land. Condo units, single family housing, commercial, and what looks to be a trendy new restaurant will grace an empty plot. Surely another 1200 people living near downtown will help to improve the area, and they will continue to treat downtown not only as a great place to work but also to play, dine, shop, etc.

Like I said, you're more than welcome to come in and voice your opinion. But the truth is, postive things seem to be shaping up for the first time in years in Regina's downtown. Like I said new resedential, commercial, retail, restaurants, entertainment, etc. On top of that, Regina has the lowest office vacany after Calgary. Surely, all of these factors warrant us to be positive in this thread about the progrss of our CBD.

I can tell you either don't live in Regina, or you're one of those people that doesn't know anything about the city. You're just spewing out false myths about downtown Regina, and at best, half-truths

1) Yes, there are less people in downtown after 5, but it doesnt empty, not even close. My girlfriend lives downtown and some nights its hard to find a parking space, even at 10 or 11pm, I also see people walking around at night all the time, and I always see people in the coffee shops at night, especially Atlantis, but the new Aegean Coast coffee place is starting to become popular as well.

2) There are nightclubs downtown, including one of the city's most popular bars

3) boarded up buildings? I don't see any boarded up buildings in downtown Regina, there are some vacant lots and empty buildings, but no worse than any other downtown in a comparible sized city. In fact, I think downtown Regina is in better shape than most downtowns

4) If you don't work downtown you don't go downtown? Totally false. Want proof? I go downtown all the time, and I've never worked in the area.

5) There will be a grocery store very soon, as CCF said.

6) Steady decline of the area? haha, I don't know where to start with this one.. in the last year alone, numerous condos have been developed downtown, a new hotel is under construction, the former hudson bay building was redeveloped, 2 new large popular coffee shops, number of businesses has increased, a beautiful new bus depot and STC HQ is currently under construction, "Victoria Place" is adding 4 floors to keep up with luxury condo demand downtown.

not to mention the population of downtown has skyrocketed in recent years

That's just what I could think of off the top of my head! And there's much more to come this year!

Sure, Downtown Regina could be better, no one's arguing that, but it's in better shape than most downtowns in cities under 200,000.. MUCH better shape.

but thanks for trolling

Website idea...what's that about? What do you need the money for? Maybe I can help?

Moving back? Awesome!
As CCF said, it will hopefully be a community, mostly forum based site where we can discuss progress, talk about what needs to be done and promote Regina

I already have all the graphics and layout done, I just need a host and some free time to create some content

Really, all I need the money for is to get a good hosting service and buy a domain name.

Maybe you could help me find a webhost? I also have some money questions, I sent you a PM

Great rebuttals Reginaguy and CCF.

it will be in the main floor of the Leader Building on Hamilton street, which is currently being rennovated. It's pretty much right next to the "Hamilton Condos" tower, which will sure be nice for those residents

The WIngate walls seem to be going up pretty quickly.

Perhaps a stupid question, but will any of the downtown projects require cranes? I'd assume as much, but I could be incorrect.

Wingate will for sure, Victoria Place will need a crane as well, I don't see how else they'd be getting the steel frames and other materials up 8-13 floors the SGI facelift might also need a crane, depending on what they do.

STC is going to be 3-5 stories right? So it will need a crane, but probably just a boom crane.

It will be fun to see all those cranes downtown at once

I do my best to avoid going downtown and I am very happy that work is not there. I am also happy that there this nothing of interest downtown that would force me to go there. More for you to enjoy.

I don't know about other cities of comparible size and maybe someone can enlighten me, but why is there no local bus service out to the airport?

There is no doubt that downtown Regina would be quite different from the way it is today were the railyard relocated. The reality is that the railyard downtown will never be removed. If memory serves me correctly, it's been put to vote a few times in the 1970s and residents have voted in favor of it, but the City has balked because the railways always wanted to share the cost of relocating north of the City.

Would I be willing to foot the bill for rail relocation to happen? No. While rail relocation would better Regina as a whole by removing a very physical barrier, such a project is tax money collected that I will see little benefit of. When voting, I keep my interests close to home. I'm certainly more interested in them repairing the 40-year-old asphalt in front of my house and maybe correcting the grading and drainage problems on the goat paths in the neighborhood.

A lot of Canadian cities don't have bus service to their airports. Not sure why, just how it is.
