Wow! I am very impressed. A community project like this could have turned out a lot worse (brown stucco boxes). Finally, a project with some colour and design sense

Wow, all those involved really outdid themselves. I like this rendering much more than the last.

This project has received great praise from its inception, and has likely raised the Saskatoon standard of communal social interaction. With this development in close proximity to the proposed Pleasant Hill neighborhood renewal project, I'm beginning to think a dramatic shift in core neighborhood perception is very near, specifically, overcoming the social plight commonly associated with Saskatoons core neighborhoods.

"Those involved believe that the collaboration at S20W will be a
national demonstration in addressing population health and
community revitalization." Source

SASKFTW, and you don't stop!

I think this is the same article as above, just a different link/host.

Cool! Regina didn't have any when I was last there in 1994!

It's different looking, I'll give it that. Not sure if I like it or not. I do like the overriding concept, sort of a new approach to some of the long standing social issues that plague the area.

That whole stretch of 20th right up to Avenue P has a lot of character and by extension a lot of potential. If this project works as planned it could go some distance in cleaning up the area. It'll be one to watch
This is a nice looking project. It should further enhance the look of 20th Street. When I was in Saskatoon last June, I noticed a lot of positive changes along 20th.

Yeah I attempted to find it but no luck.

Its needed, but it always comes down to financing. The USSU recently voted and passed a resolution to increase the infrastructure fee charged to students. Students must now pay $34 per term, up from the previous $10. I expect the fee increase will permit construction to start sooner rather than later. Should have increased the fee years ago, IMHO.

On another topic I was browsing around the net, and looking through the portfolio of Saunders Evans Archietects and came upon the renderings for the past proposed $70,000,000 downtown casino. They state that the projects designed were for the warehouse district along the 25th street extension, as well as a location on the banks of the South Saskatchewan. I don't remember these other proposals at all, and it was only 4 years ago(granted I wasnt as interested in these things 4 yrs ago, but still).

I always thought the casino was proposed to be constructed on the parking lot across from TCUP, minor details get lost over time

Saunders Evans Archietects website http://www.saundersevans.com/indexstep.html

First rendering is obviously the river bank location, and they state the second one was slated for the warehouse district as part of the 25th street extension.

Kind of a shame that casino didn't get built downtown, it would of made a great opportunity.

I was looking at some projects on the Saunders Evans Archietects website. I think these guys could do a great job on the "MOB".

Station 20 and the Pleasant Hill project are going to do great things for Saskatoon's inner city. I am very excited to see that these projects are going ahead and it appears that they're not holding back on any aspect of it. It's encouraging to see that the 3 levels of government are stepping up and committing to creating something that will anchor revitalization and change in the area. Saskatoon's west side has great potential, and this is more evidence that change is beginning to occur, and this potential will be realized. Renewal is already occurring along 20th street and once river landing phase 2, station 20, and the affordable housing projects are underway... imagine the changes that WILL occur

I can't wait to see the area 5,10,20 years down the road.

It appears that when St. Marys school in pleasant hill is replaced with a new one years down the road that it will become a community centre... probably much like the albert school community centre. another positive for the neighborhood

New to the thread...read back some ways...but hard to differentiate the proposals from the approved.

So what's on the horizon for Saskatoon...specifically the downtown area?

U of S - College Quarter concept up for discussion

Preliminary concept drawing of the proposed College Quarter development.

By Colleen MacPherson

The University is about to begin testing the waters with a concept that would transform the neighbourhood around campus, and help the institution meet its goals for student enrolment.

A broad consultation process is being set up to gather feedback on the College Quarter proposal, a development on land bordered by College Drive, Preston Ave., 14th Street and Cumberland that has as its anchor residences for U of S students. Judy Yungwirth, director of Corporate Administration, said the concept is a continuation of the search for a viable way of meeting student housing needs in an extremely hot construction market.

“It’s a University principle that all student residences be self-financing, which means rents cover costs. But in today’s climate, you can’t build a residence that will be able to sustain itself financially when you factor in construction costs or programming, which we see as being an important part of student life,” she said. “We’ve worked for a couple of years on plans for residences both on campus and at College and Cumberland and we’ve come to the realization there’s going to have to be a large contribution from the University or a major donor.”

The solution, she said, seems to be development of a larger community that generates some revenue to offset the cost of the residences.

Early in 2006, the University became aware of outside interest in this kind of development, namely from Vancouver architect and developer Stanley Kwok, whose wife Eva is a former dean of the College of Home Economics. Yungwirth said Kwok had an initial look at the site in August and held discussions with University officials about the various proposals for residences that have been put forward over the years. In the fall, Kwok was engaged to do an initial concept plan.

“We want to create an environment, a neighbourhood environment that students will want to come to,” said James Cook, manager of business opportunities in Corporate Administration. “ Stanley understood that. He understands that this can be a selling point when we’re recruiting students.”

Stressing that “we’re just dreaming at this point,” Yungwirth said the College Quarter concept includes a number of elements:

* a variety of residence options for students
* market housing built on the principles of high design and sustainability “but highly identified as part of the University”
* commercial services appropriate to a residential development such as a drug store and dry cleaner
* grocery store
* entertainment facilities, possibly including the proposed fine and performing arts centre
* recreation facilities such as a twin ice arena
* a living complex for senior citizens
* a land bridge connecting College Quarter to the main campus

There is also a great deal of emphasis placed on environmental sustainability in the concept, said Cook. There will be more pathways than roads and no surface parking. The plan also includes a water feature connecting various parts of the development. This, said Cook, could be used for recreation purposes but it also meets the city’s goal for storm water management in the area. (continued)

Awww so teasing

I want a more detailed image of this, like what each area/building might be used for, What are those red buildings at the top, student residence with outdoor swimming pools?

The water feature which seems to connect to every corner of the development is interesting. It could be utilized for recreational use, maybe canoeing, kayaking in the summer, and ice skating in the winter.

I know its a concept, but what a concept. I really think the city, university, and province need to get onboard with some serious discussions with respect to sustainability, its a vital part of the solution to our environmental woes.

Wow, great first post eric121.. i mean, is this something they're actually considering building in Saskatoon??? The whole layout just looks really great. Like who came up with the moat idea? haha... i love it. It will really add alot to that area and help to increase density in the inner city. I think the development will bring so much life and vibrancy and be an exciting addition to the university and saskatoon in general. not to mention how much more appealing it will make the u of s be to prospective students. ...cant wait to see some architectural designs for it.

i hadnt heard anything about plans for the rumley building. i hope something exciting goes ahead there. i think its the most striking building in our little warehouse district.
