NB Power President and CEO Lori Clark was pleased to join Candu Energy Inc., members of government, NB Power staff and the new nuclear community in Saint John on Aug. 11 for the announcement that CANDU will establish a base of operations in the city.

As Lori shared during her remarks, “Point Lepreau gives New Brunswick a strong foundation to help shape Canada’s nuclear future.” This announcement builds on that foundation and creates new opportunities as we look ahead to the next generation of nuclear energy.

Thank you to CANDU for hosting us at Grannan’s and for investing in New Brunswick’s nuclear future!

I wonder who the specific members of the “New Nuclear Community in Saint John” were?

Within the Saint John region, and New Brunswick as a whole, how many nuclear firms currently exist? Moltex and ARC got a lot of press for their SMR plays, but surely there’s many other nuclear related companies already operating in NB, as well as new firms looking to invest in operations in conjunction with Point Lepreau.

This was the accompanying image. I spot 3 MLAs? The mayor and the CEO of NB Power. I don't recognize the rest.

I’d have to look at the websites again for Moltex and ARC, but I’m pretty sure neither company is represented in this group. Assuming most of these people are representing CANDU, AtkinsRéalis, and the Canadian Nuclear Association, but maybe one or two represent local firms?

There could have been others not in the photo too; I wouldn't read too much into it.

From my perspective, ARC/Moltex are being pushed aside in favour of another CANDU.

I am curious what this base of operations will entail? A token workforce for now or until something official is announced?

I wouldn’t read too much into the photo either, at least one of the other people I recognize is just a DM from the Department of Energy, so it’s mostly a provincial government photo.

NB is out of energy, another reactor is absolutely coming at Lepreau, and it's sooner than later.

The site was specced out to accommodate it from day one; I say it's about damn time. Anything that reduces reliance on energy sources with airborne emissions is a win in my book.

Quoting this in this thread.

15-20 is a good number to set up the groundwork for something bigger; great to see.

CANDU is owned by Montréal based AtkinsRéalis - their investment chart shows a potential reactor build in New Brunswick in 2029. That would require 2000-3000 workers for 6 years so developers will only have a few years to ramp up and build their projects for the expected influx of workers, both direct and indirect job workers.
More positive news to report on a second reactor for Point Lepreau.

I wonder if there are still any plans for an SMR in addition to a second CANDU.

As part of next week's 'investment summit' being hosted by Carney and the federal government, there is a 66-page prospectus listing 167 projects with investment opportunities.

As part of New Brunswick's latest tariff response, they mention that eight of these are NB opportunities.

Eight projects will be brought to the Canada Investment Summit next week to build a stronger New Brunswick economy.
The Globe and Mail is reporting that a second generator at Point Lepreau is one of those projects.

Nuclear power also makes the list, in the form of New Brunswick’s exploration of new generation at its Point Lepreau site.
Outside of the Lepreau and the data centre, the other six projects are yet to be confirmed.

Some more details and quotes in this one than in the previous coverage.

CANDU Energy to open Saint John office, boost support for Point Lepreau

Quote:
In discussions with NB Power, McDonald said AtkinsRéalis identified Saint John as a strong location for expansion, citing the potential to support the city’s economy and broader growth in the region.

The new office at Market Square will create 15 to 18 jobs, including engineering, administrative, indigenous relations support, business development, and project execution positions, she said.

McDonald explained they are working on renovating the space and intend to hire at least eight engineering experts by 2027.

I heard from a reliable source that one component of this summer's shutdown involved some kind of physical changes to enable medical isotope extraction. Based on that, I am fairly confident the proposal will come to fruition.
