Vintage 1918 photo / LOS ANGELES 37th Street SCHOOL - 8th Grade GIRLS with NAMES







Refresh my memory: ....Have we seen a photograph of the 37th Street School on NLA?

I have passed that building a thousand times and did not recognize it....here it is from the opposite side (and I am sure that we have seen a photo of the building when it was a drug store)....




The mystery photo is looking south on Doheny at Santa Monica Blvd., the cars are turning west as they enter Beverly Hills.

I thought the sign on the building across the street on the left in the mystery image was "Carl's", that should have been the clue I was looking for...there was a Carl's Market on that corner for generations.

IIRC, the other view captures the buildings on the right edge with a datable movie poster to put this in the ‘20’s. Hollywood Storage will be around the corner and the PE freight house will move from the “future Ivar” spot to the area right of the camera location here. A spotting feature is the Rainbow Market on the north length.

We're in San Pedro. The San Pedro CDs from the '50s show the Alexander Hotel at 541 Harbor Boulevard S and the White Swan Cafe 113-115 E 6th Street. Pretty much everything has gone now except the Municipal Building on the left of the second photo.

Very well done, richkay! And it turns out one of the answers AI gave to odinthor wasn't too far off.
Until you solved it, I was leaning towards this not being in L.A.
The palm trees are still there but are MUCH taller.

We can’t read the other ghost in the left edge due to graffiti, but it might be readable in the Richard Wojcik collection image from the ‘70’s found on VLA.

You know what I'm going to ask next, right?

Find me the name of that cocktail lounge...(I think it's a bar because the vertical/blade sign looks like it says 'cocktails'.)

After all this time it’s just occurred to me why we are seeing these groups of people at this side of the block. The old fire station had become the Greyhound Bus Terminal and the Asbury Bus Lines had a depot or stop down the block too. (Santa Fe Trailways/fred Harvey were up one block in the 1700’s also on the west side.) So during the war years it wouldn’t be odd to find soldiers, girls, taxis and what not gathering around there pretty regularly. And there’s usually a bar or cocktail lounge in the area of bus terminals for all those send offs.

The Del Webb Airport Center was designed by Welton Becket and constructed between 1962 and 1964. From the Pacific Coast Architecture Database:

This 12-story office tower was located at an entrance to the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX); originally called the McCulloch Center (located on land owned previously by the McCulloch Company), it was the first building in a projected $50 million complex of seven 9 and 12-story office buildings (containing 1,615,000 square feet), called the "Del Webb Center."

As this postcard shows, it was located at 6151 W Century Boulevard.

The building being referred to in the past tense made me think it had been demolished, but I think it's just been repurposed as the Homewood Suites by Hilton - see GSV.
