Found this dark and blurry photo of the market with the clock tower on San Fernando Road in Glendale but can't make out what it was called then. In the foreground is the Wayne McAllister - designed McDonnell's Rancho restaurant.

St Joseph's Medical Center at 501 S Buena Vista, Burbank - just across the road from Walt Disney Studios. It's now know as the Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center.

This appears to be the same building, although it's no longer easily visible from street level. There's another picture at burbankinfocus.org. From the link:

In 1953, St. Joseph's Hospital opened a new $2 million wing which made it the valley's leading medical center with a capacity of 250 beds.

The most interesting thing about the above photo is what you cannot see.

What you cannot see is that the house-filled street which dominates is no longer there. In an expansion of the Coca-Cola property, at 1334 S. Central Avenue, which took place so recently as 2008-2017, that street (Birch St.), as well as certain others, has, with its houses, been obliterated.


Correction: That should be 1942 for Renie.

The second most interesting thing in the photo is what you almost cannot see, the nearly out-of-frame large building at the top, which began its life as the 14th Street School. It had various happenings and vicissitudes, with which we'll concern ourselves with only:

A rebuilding took place:

You called it, e-r. We're looking NW across Orange Grove Ave. at the small PE Burbank terminal yard that faced on Glenoaks Blvd., visible on our right. The photograph was taken not long before rail service ended on this line.
