"This is my Grandfather on my Mom's side. He was born in 1899 and died in 1977, the year I graduated from High School.
His son my Uncle Norman was in the Navy on a Destroyer in the Pacific. Uncle Norman was wounded twice and survived the sinking of his first ship the USS Strong in the Kula Gulf."
Ralph G. Carpenter had the distinction of registering for military service in both World Wars....
This 1963 postcard of the Figueroa Hotel is on eBay. The original sender refers to it as a "motel" 30 miles from where their relative lives. I hadn't seen the theater-style marquee before.

A mystery intersection.
It's the intersection of Sunset and Hammond. Here's the same location in 1957:

It was at 209 Colorado Avenue in Santa Monica, but seems to have been demolished sometime in the 1970s. There's an unattractive multi-story parking garage there now.
Before Automotive Classics, it was Hastings Chevrolet (below) and La Monica Motors, a Ford dealership.
During the late 60s it became the PSYCHEDELIC CONSPIRACY, although, the address changed to 8804 because it broke into two businesses. The neighboring store was called SIMBA and The CORNER POCKET Pool Hall was still located on the other side.
The PSYCHEDELIC CONSPIRACY was the most impressive and genuinely psychedelic of all the shops in Los Angeles. The dazzling effect of the store was achieved by a silver ceiling that reflected light from a complicated deployment of colored lamps above, below and inside some large translucent plastic sculptures made by the then-owner of the shop, Tony Melendy. People would have to adjust his their eyes to the lights & their and sinuses to the thick haze of incense.

In 1985 all the original store fronts were taken down to build offices for Carolco Pictures and various other offices.
It was previously the site of "Mickey Cohen Headquarters" and some of his "legitimate" businesses.

The unattractive parking structure is part of Santa Monica Place at the corner of Colorado and Main st.
Still on the corner of Ocean Park Boulevard and Main Street in Santa Monica. The most recent GSV image (September 2025) shows the Village Car Wash temporarily closed for repairs, but both the car wash and liquor store can be seen in older images.
