This kind of looks like a replacement for the old Sunny Hill on that site, although those programs moved into the Oak St BCCH campus.

Either way, I'm sure this will be appreciated by families who need it.

Couple of new rezoning applications up:

https://www.shapeyourcity.ca/730-raymur-ave

https://www.shapeyourcity.ca/3696-kingsway

Some of these unit sizes are insane. On the Kingsway one, there's a 770 sf 3 bedroom. How is that remotely functional?

A daycare at 730 Raymur? Not a safe location!

That area of Strathcona isn't that bad.

Tell that to all the families that live in the neighbourhood.

It's opposite a seniors home and a large social housing complex full of families with children. Admitedly some of the Chinese seniors can be a bit frightening.

haha these responses speaks to the level of deterioration in the city

Admittedly, I did end up discovering that UBC spoiled me from what living in Vancouver is actually like

The area near La Casa Gelato is practically Wesbrook. Nothing good nor bad ever happens there.

What exactly are you advocating for? Daycares should be banned in some parts of the city despite the fact that people live there? I heard that Iran has been deteriorating recently, should Iran ban daycares and schools from the country?

Sounding very sheltered and privileged.

If you haven’t lived here for long how are you claiming the city has deteriorated, where are you getting comparison? Have you even walked through that area?

I admitted I was in my comment. Especially after living dt for another 5 years after graduating uni.

I know you don't contribute photo updates to this forum, so maybe it's understandable that you're unaware that I regularly post updates of that area and DT in waves, even though I live in TO now: Check my Flickr.

But when I last went to that area a few months ago, I told myself I did not want to voluntarily walk through that area again, so either things have improved or our standards of this city being "okay" is fundamentally different. Do some travelling.

'That area' has never had any sort of a problem, unlike some other parts of the DTES. I walk through it pretty much every day, and have done for many years.

"Never had any sort of problem"? Are we forgetting about Strathcona Park? I think it's out of touch to say the area is unsuitable for a daycare, but I think it's equally out of touch to say the area is perfect and has never had a single issue.

The encampment in Strathcona Park (which was removed five years ago) didn't seem to cause issues north of Prior Street. The serious incidents all occurred within the encampment. No area is perfect, and if you prefer a more accurate statement, I'm not aware of any obvious problems in the immediate area where the Telus/Ledcor rental towers are proposed.

So what exactly happened to you when you were walking through that area? I've seen more mentally disturbed people (tried to attack, yelling, waving sticks) in Chinatown, downtown, Lost Lagoon, Granville Island seawall, on the bus...

Uh Strathcona Park is the immediate area. There was the homeless guy who was set on fire up the street just a few years ago too. I'm sure you'll find some way to explain that away though.

If you refuse to even acknowledge that some areas do have problems, you're never going to convince people that can see the issues that they're overreacting.

I wouldn't characterize 5 blocks away as 'the immediate area', but you obviously do. I'm glad we agree there's no problem with having a childcare at Raymur and Prior.

So if someone gets killed and dismembered in West Vancouver does that make that neighbourhood any more unsafe?

I post the most articles to the Public Disorder thread if you want to say I'm light on crime or oblivious to crime in the city

I would tend to argue that street crime and domestic violence are pretty different categories with very different effects on public safety. I find most people even laugh off gang hits and almost encourage them, "Let them kill each other", but the idea that sometimes someone randomly gets stabbed or set on fire downtown tends to turn people off of the area.
