Relocation underway for first of three Granville SROs, but timeline for others unclear

Albert Ouimette is glad to be saying goodbye to his home of almost six years.

Ouimette and his dog Diesel are leaving the Luugat hotel on Granville Street, moving to a modular housing project in south Vancouver.

Another former Luugat resident, Kevin Doig, is already happily settled in his new home, a self-contained unit in a Downtown Eastside social housing building.

Doig said B.C. Housing staff have been meeting with Luugat residents since late last year to determine their housing needs, and there has been a “steady stream” of residents moving out of the hotel. He estimates the building is now almost half empty.

The agreement shared Tuesday by Boyle and Sim commits the governments of both Vancouver and B.C. to maintaining the city’s temporary modular housing leases for at least five additional years while the longer-term housing options are developed.
