Here’s an LAPL image from 1958 posted to FB on May 20, 2025 which looks eastward over Barnsdall Park (Olive Hill) and captured a circular structure at the triangular corner just next to where Sunset Blvd. meets the Hollywood Blvd. extension. Could that be a drive-in restaurant and if so would it be the Burl’s location? The link: https://www.facebook.com/losangelesrelic...ing-southeast-1958-pre/1120324983473356/

I saw, among others, Magnum Force there.IIRC, may have even bopped by the original Bob’s nearby on that occasion. The 1950’s replacement building that is.

The topic of Los Angeles newsstands was discussed not too long ago on NLA. I was reminded of it when I read this article from today's L.A. Times. I thought it was very well written.

Thanks for that, many of those newsstands still around mentioned in this article I am unfamiliar with!

Bookstores and supermarkets used to have magazine and/or newspaper areas in them and those are rare as well.

From the article: "Today, newsstands are rare gems we stumble upon, reminders of the connection we feel when we flip through a magazine, or meet a stranger. The feeling they stir is comparable to that of a record store, where the weight of vinyl remains a comfort even as streaming services provide instant music."

Not only newsstands and record/music stores, but video stores and coffee shops...all the places where actual human connections were to be had. If you say "coffee shop" now, most people think you mean a place like Starbuck's or Coffee Bean, not a restaurant like Ship's or Ben Frank's or Norm's. There's hardly any Denny's still around; I can only think of one in the area where there used to be a few more. Even WeHo's 1969 IHOP is gone now.

Number 7 is the biggest mystery. For the life of me I can't tell what the dark thing is dangling over the street.

Does anyone -by chance- know where in Brentwood Shirley Temple lived in the 1930s?

eBay

I hope her adorable house is still standing.

Who might own such a place???

I am sorry I don't see more places like this today. An Olive Garden could close and you could put any kind of restaurant in there without changing decor. Reminds me of ice cream stands shaped like cones.

Also would be a place THE PENGUIN would own. Lure the Dynamic Duo with hotcakes and then drug then and lock them in the freezer.

Judging by Google Maps the house next door looks more like it. (it has a circular turret).

Mr. Goggle might be wrong on this one.

The HONEYMOON EXPRESS Diner in 1959. Captured a while back but reverse images search finds no match for the source. These were Orange Empire Trolley Museum volunteers saving this wreck from out somewhere in Van Nuys. It was once a trailer picked up by Pacific Electric from the Visalia Electric and used locally with the 800-class wooden interurbans. But it was retired in the ‘30’s and sold to an unknown party to become this diner…possibly Mae West herself based on some reports of her applying for similar permissions in Van Nuys. The car exists in storage but unrestored so far. The big question is can we identify this exact location? All I can see is a sign ti the left for Universal Feeds which might appear in another image. From another photo, the diner bore the address number of 7206 which could match North Van Nuys Boulevard near where the west extension of Sherman Way existed. Any clues?

Non-credited source.

Colorado in Glendale. An unidentified diner location. Another snap previously posted online which Gaggle can’t reverse locate now. Notice the roof signage for Bard’s Theater just to the east of these folks? Could this be the spot where Robert C. “ Bob” Wian took over a stand to re-open it as his first burger joint?

The Dinerville Facebook page where I found this picture of the Honeymoon Express Cafe gives the address as 77206 Van Nuys Boulevard, but Google can't find that location and the number on the front seems to only say 7206 (this is probably the other photo you were referring to). Martin Turnbull also has the image below on his site, and that gives the address as 7206 Van Nuys Boulevard.
