There’s obviously enough demand so what can you do? The world is fucking depressing and everyone wants to be medicated. Myself included!!

There were 4 weed stores before, then Tweed and Tokyo Smoke closed. So the neighbourhood has been down to "only" 2 weed stores for awhile. Maybe 3 is the correct number that the neighbourhood can sustain.

If only the Pallister government didn’t make it a requirement that the pot stores had to cover up their windows like a rural hotel bar from the 1950s. They should have let them have storefronts like any other retailer. The pot stores are dead spaces right now.

Agreed. It's a dumb idea that does nothing for curb appeal. If liquor stores don't have to cover up, why do cannabis stores have to?

Assume it was a compromise to appease the social/religious conservative wing of such policymakers who were on the fence about legalization.

^I don't think the covered windows are entirely the fault of the previous government. Last year I contacted the Minister responsible to complain about this issue after NDP MLA Glen Simard was quoted in the media saying they were looking at relaxing these requirements.

Here's the response I got from Kristianne Dechant, Executive Director and CEO of the Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Authority of Manitoba (LGCA):

"As you are likely aware, federal restrictions imposed under the Cannabis Act (Canada) guide the provincial framework for cannabis regulation in Manitoba. The Cannabis Act prohibits cannabis and cannabis accessories from being displayed in a way that may result in it being seen by a young person, such as when walking by a store window. In alignment with this federal requirement, the provincial Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Control Act (the Act) currently requires age-restricted retailers in Manitoba to implement measures to prevent persons outside the store from viewing the interior of the store. The provincial requirement is not specifically for window coverings or opaque windows, and licensed retailers may propose alternate measures to meet this requirement."

So, this suggests retailers could have clear storefront windows, but keep product behind curtains or whatever inside the store, just like they do for cigarettes.

It sucks, I hate the covered windows. Such a blight on the streetscape.

Seems like a double standard to me. If cannabis stores were operated by the provincial government, like liquor stores are, would they still be subject to these product concealment rules? I call BS.

Opaque windows are likely the cheapest and most hassle-free solution. Why would any shop owner go through the extra trouble and expense to come up with a more appealing alternative that meets the government's criteria? Opaque windows: one and done.

I went today and it was really busy! Looks like they are doing well so far. Nice to see something go in there. The selection is kind of limited so hopefully they get some more products soon.

Or a shop where all the merch is hidden behind cabinets. How inviting!

With Papirro moving into the Adelaide Block, a new wine/cocktail bar in the courtyard building, and the old A&W becoming a weed store, that fills up a lot of the most visible vacant storefronts. Now we just need something to move into the old Into The Music and the old Starbucks.

A little lounge area separated from the goods by a pony wall. A Fatheads collage. A projector screen with trippy visuals. Lush velvet curtains. A window display with manequins doing rad shit like shredding guitars and karate. A big rube goldberg machine like they used to have in malls. A stack of CRT televisions. Taxidermy. Wolf blankets. An Amsterdam hooker. An impenetrable jungle of houseplants. So much smoke you can't see a thing. A big aquarium. A really big ant farm. A small chicken farm. A tiny Truman Show.

I could go on but the point is, if today's stoners can't find creative ways to hide weed then legalization has done us a great disservice.
