Or a shop where all the merch is hidden behind cabinets. How inviting!

With Papirro moving into the Adelaide Block, a new wine/cocktail bar in the courtyard building, and the old A&W becoming a weed store, that fills up a lot of the most visible vacant storefronts. Now we just need something to move into the old Into The Music and the old Starbucks.

A little lounge area separated from the goods by a pony wall. A Fatheads collage. A projector screen with trippy visuals. Lush velvet curtains. A window display with manequins doing rad — like shredding guitars and karate. A big rube goldberg machine like they used to have in malls. A stack of CRT televisions. Taxidermy. Wolf blankets. An Amsterdam —. An impenetrable jungle of houseplants. So much smoke you can't see a thing. A big aquarium. A really big ant farm. A small chicken farm. A tiny Truman Show.

I could go on but the point is, if today's stoners can't find creative ways to hide weed then legalization has done us a great disservice.

Oh yeah. They used to hire window dressers. That was a real job for someone working in a department store.

My office has done some nice suburban pot stores. They have small vestibules with welcome desks at the front to allow clear windows. Makes it feel safer as you leave being able to see out.

Somebody I went to high school with in the late 1970's ended up as a display person for Eaton's at Garden City and worked in a crew doing all the displays in the store. I can't recall if Eaton's Garden City had display windows like Eaton's downtown did.

From what I heard years later she took what she learned from doing that and ended up running her own interior design business in Regina

It's a nice looking store—but this is Tuxedo, after all. Run-of-the-mill cannabis shops in less tony neighbourhoods can't be bothered to spend the money on a more appealing solution like this. So they resort to cheap opaque window coverings instead. That's why I think they should abolish the pointless coverup rule altogether.

Totally agree. Same with tattoo shops. Some of the window coverings make certain buildings look incredibly dingy. I’m thinking of the pot shop/vape place in south osborne next to Tabula Rasa.

I don't understand how private cannabis stores are required to shield their products from the eyes of children, but the province is allowed to have windows into the Liquor Mart.

I think the province and other governments need to stop clutching their pearls and just allow good design to prevail. Maybe have some advertising rules, but everyone knows exactly what goes on behind the frosted glass, it's not some big secret.

111 Nassau Street N
Location: 111 Nassau Street N
Developer: Bluestone Homes Inc
Architect:
Status In development
Documents: Variance & conditional use
Media:
Description: Bluestone Homes Inc., is proposing to demolish the existing 1904-era 5-unit multi-family dwelling on a 6,577 sq ft site at 111 Nassau Street North in Winnipeg’s McMillan neighbourhood and construct a new three-storey (approximately 35 feet high) 10-unit multi-family residential building. The project requires variances to the Winnipeg Zoning By-Law to permit a reduced lot area per dwelling unit of 657 sq ft (instead of the required 800 sq ft), the provision of only 7 parking stalls (instead of 10) at the rear of the site accessed from the public lane—including one accessible stall and one visitor stall—and the elimination of parking-area buffering within 20 feet of the rear lot line. Units 1 and 2 will have direct front entrances, while units 3 through 10 will be accessed via side entrances on the north and south elevations. Secure indoor bicycle storage is proposed at the northwest corner of the building adjacent to the rear parking area, and the landscaping plan includes the addition of two trees and ten shrubs. The development will also incorporate a minimum of two affordable housing units for at least 10 years.

^^ only went once. Kind of an eccentric place. Cardboard boxes stacked in plain sight behind the counter. Coffee didn't stand out for me. Hopefully it's replaced quickly.

It was never really meant to be a cafe, as I understood it. The owner of MAKE is/was an architecture prof at the University of Manitoba and opened it as a place for students to study. There was tons of displays of architecture and often no music playing, but also an outlet for him to share his love of coffee. It was different, but I always liked it.
